8- The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday April 11, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Oakville Christian School tops at science and engineering fair At the Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair (BASEF) at McMaster University in late March the Oakville Christian School (OCS) earned the BASEF Committee Trophy as top elementary school in the regional competition. The science and engineering fair included more than 400 students from Halton, Hamilton, Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk who entered 283 projects in the competition. Among the Oakville Christian School students receiving top honours at the regional fair were Matthew Girgis, Lisa Bast, and James Davis, all Grade 8 students at OCS. Their projects will now represent Halton at the CanadaWide Science Fair to be held in Truro, Nova Scotia in May. James Davis' project, `Wave Goodbye to Microwaves,' investigated if microwaves negatively affect the foods or liquids they heat. His project received the Silver Merit Award, Hamilton Wentworth Occasional Teacher Local Presentation and Aesthetics Award and Canada Wide Science Fair Trip Award. Matthew Girgis' project, `Breathin' Easy,' investigated the effect of plants on indoor air quality; testing oxygen, humidity and airborne microbes. His project received the Silver Merit Award Nelson Steel Award and Canada-Wide Science Fair Trip Award. Lisa Bast's project, `Tomorrow's Way,' was a vehicle innovation that sought to combine a solar-powered vehicle with a levitational magnetic roadway. Bast's project received the Silver Merit Award, Dofasco Product Development Business Process Award, Procor Engineering Award, Primary Fluid Systems Junior Engineering Award and Canada Wide Science Fair Trip Award. Altogether, Oakville Christian School students won five silver merit awards, five bronze merit awards and 10 special awards.
