www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday April 11, 2007 - 13 Homewood Suites a home away from home By Andrew Fruch SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER For many families, a two-week stay in a hotel is more than enough. But for one Oakville family, two weeks is nothing in comparison to the seven months they spent at Homewood Suites Hotel. The D'Alesio family has been staying in a suite at the hotel since August 2006, when the D'Alesios decided to tear down their house and completely rebuild. While their new house was under construction, they decided to make Homewood Suites their temporary home, originally planning to be out by Nov. 1. "We kept extending our stay by two months every time we got into a hold up with the renovations," said Lorraine D'Alesio. "But the people have been wonderful here." With construction falling behind schedule, the D'Alesios were left with little choice, but to get comfortable. The length of their stay allowed the family to get to know all the staff on a level not usually seen in a hotel. On many occasions, the staff went out of their way to make the family at home. DEREK WOOLLAM / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER RIGHT AT HOME: The D'Alesio family poses at Homewood Suites where they've been staying for the past seven months while their Oakville home was torn down and completely rebuilt. From left, Katrina, Daniel, Guy, Lorraine and Lucas will be sad to leave Friday morning after making so many great friends at the hotel, but are looking forward to settling into their new home. One such occasion was during Christmas, the D'Alesio family members were allowed to hang their stockings on the fireplace in the main lobby and use the boardroom for gift wrapping. As all family members celebrated their birthday throughout the duration of the stay, the staff were quick to sign cards and present the children with gift bags. "Personally I don't even think there are words to describe it," said Guy D'Alesio. "They are not even staff to us, they are almost like our friends. It's almost like staying at someone's place." The D'Alesio children, Katrina, the eldest, and brothers Daniel and Lucas, made the best of their stay, enjoying the pool and other benefits of living in a hotel. For the entire family, Homewood Suites was the perfect mixture of hospitality and professionalism. "After we'd been here so long, you'd almost think they would grow tired of you, and they never did," said Lorraine. "They were hospitable right until the very end." Homewood Suites is owned by the Hilton Corporation. It specializes in long-term stays and has created an atmosphere that is more intimate than a standard hotel. Each suite is equipped with the comforts of home, such as a full-sized refrigerator and stove top. The D'Alesios are excited to be moving into their new house, but they admit that after spending such a long time at the Homewood Suites, it is a bit sad to say goodbye. Both Guy and Lorraine said, "If we had to spend seven months in any hotel, it would be here."
