It effectively fights tooth decay and therefore is added to Ontario's water supply. However, too much fluoride swallowed during the tooth formation years (birth to age six) can cause dental fluorosis (white specks on the teeth to brown marks at its most severe) -- and to that end too much fluoride is cautioned against -- particularly for children under age six. Such warnings are carried on toothpaste as small children may eat the toothpaste, which could put too much fluoride into their systems as their teeth develop. Such damage is less likely for permanent teeth where fluoride intake is limited to that in water supplies and toothpaste. So where does the line get drawn? Dr. Paul Connett, toxicol- Dr. Paul Connett ogist and chemist from the U.S. where he is a professor emeritus of Lawrence University in Canton, New York was in town last week asking Oakvillians just that question. Connett spoke recently to about 20 people in a public session at Town Hall -- at the invitation of resident Diane Sprules. Connett, the night after making a presentation at Town Hall on the ills of trash incineration, spoke against the practice of fluoridating public water supplies. "If Ontario was to stop fluoridating its water, it would send shock waves across the border," said Connett who has been lobbying the U.S. government to stop such practice. Not every country, province or municipality fluoridates its water. Ontario is one of the largest areas in Canada to do so, while other areas don't. It is a provincial or territorial decision and the amount of fluoride a population is exposed to is a determining factor. Connett, who argued the practice is one equivalent to medicating the water supply without the consent of the individual, posed many questions to those present. The practice of fluoridating water supplies has been around for decades -- and deemed acceptable and beneficial for all those years by health and dental governing bodies -- when done at optimum levels. It is said to provide tooth protection to a large number of people at a low cost. Fluoride prevents cavities by protecting teeth and Health Canada, the Canadian Dental Association, the Canadian Public Health Association, the Canadian Medical Association and the World Health Organization endorse fluoridation of drinking water for the prevention of tooth decay. Fluoride is a mineral found in nature including the ocean, earth's crust and fresh water and there is said to be no known health risk associated with drinking water fluoridated within the recommended levels. Connett however questioned those levels and also what effect, if too much Our Lowest Prices of the Season! $ 400off Installed Kenmore 13 S.E.E.R.** central air conditioning and heat pumps ®/MD 10-year parts warranty on compressor; details in store 5-year parts and labour warranty on all other components; details in store Copeland® scroll compressor 2-speed fan Enhanced coil guard with 3/8" grill spacing for durability Baked-on powder coat finish over galvanized steel #77200/320 series **Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio Our experts will help you select the proper system to meet your budget and needs JUST CALL 1-866-506-7779 % 24 HOURS A DAY, 7 DAYS A WEEK.
