Hundreds will gather for great laughs for a great cause at the fundraiser in support of the Foundation Fighting Blindness. This show is particularly meaningful to local residents as it was co-founded by former Oakville resident, Ann Morrison (now of Burlington), and her comic friend, Meg Soper of Oakville, after Morrison's son, Gavin, was diagnosed with a degenerated eye disease at age five. "We're very pleased to present this show in Oakville because of the tremendous interest and support from the community, many of whom know someone affected by an eye disease." said Morrison, Manager of Annual Giving at the Foundation Fighting Blindness and co-founder of Comic Vision. Patrons will file into the OE Banquet & Conference Centre located at 2245 Speers Rd. for an evening of socializing and laughter on Tuesday, April 24 at 6:30 p.m. The show begins at 8 p.m. Last year, Comic Vision in Oakville, London and Toronto raised a combined $233,000 for The Foundation Fighting Blindness to support vision research. April 13, 14 & 15, 2007 Glen Abbey Recreation Centre 1415 Third Line north of the Q.E.W This year, that number is expected to grow because of increased community support and sponsorship, as well as an additional event being held in Vancouver, B.C. Since leaving Southwest Missouri State University, where he attended on a golf scholarship, Hemstad has captivated audiences worldwide with his clean and refreshing take on daily life and the frustrations of the modern world. With a charming demeanor paired with quick wit and an ability to read the crowd, the "superstar on the rise" has already appeared on CBC at the Halifax Comedy Festival numerous times and has been twice recognized at the Canadian Comedy Awards as one of Canada's funniest new comics. Hemstad's supporting cast at Comic Vision includes colourful Canadian comics Jay Malone, Debra DiGiovanni and Meg Soper (the event co-founder). The concept of Comic Vision in support of the Foundation Fighting Blindness originated in 1999 when Morrison discovered her son had retinitis pigmentosa (RP) at the age of five. RP is a degenerative eye disease in which peripheral vision, night vision, colour and depth perception are all affected. When learning of Gavin's condition, Soper, Morrison's friend and a comedian, also of Oakville, jumped in and suggested laughter could make a difference. Since its inception, Comic Vision has raised about $523,000, contributing to discoveries into the causes of blindness and bringing Canadian researchers closer to finding treatments and cures. Researchers anticipate that a cure for some forms of hereditary blindness could be discovered within as few as five years. The Foundation Fighting Blindness (FFB) is the only organization in Canada dedicated solely to funding research to discover causes, treatments and cures for genetic eye diseases that cause blindness such as retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration and related retinal diseases. Through its researchers in teaching hospitals and universities across the country, the Foundation has pioneered major discoveries into the causes of retinal diseases that cause blindness. Canadian researchers and the Foundation Fighting Blindness believe that a cure is in sight. The Foundation was established in 1974 and since then has funded more than $14 million in vision research in Canada.
