On Monday night, Dave Lemkay, general manager of the Canadian Forestry Association presented Mayor Rob Burton with a certificate recognizing the town's stewardship and sound practices toward sustainable forest development, management and conservation. "The town's urban forest planning and management is evident in the beauty and integrity of its street trees, woodlots and trails," said Lemkay. "We are honoured to receive this designation," said Mayor Rob Burton. "Enhancing our natural environment is a key goal for the Town and one way we can do this is by ensuring our urban forests are well maintained and protected. The preservation of our environment is a key component in making Oakville the most livable Town in Canada." The Town of Oakville was recognized based on its strong track record of urban forest planning and management. Examples of the Town's leadership include: · Being the first municipality in Canada to have the designation of Certified Forest for Iroquois Shoreline Woods Park, by the internationally recognized Forest Stewardship Council of Canada. · Being the first municipality in Ontario to complete a community-wide Urban Forest Effects Model (UFORE) analysis. · Having Official Plan policies that support its urban forest.
