This demonstration is targeted obviously at the parents who drive to school." The LB Green team was created in September 2006 as a way for students to learn about the environment and do something to protect it. The team has numbered an average of 30 Grade 5 students throughout the year, and they have already organized and carried out numerous initiatives like a litterless lunch week and a walk to school campaign throughout the course of the year. The Green Team has also been a learning experience for the students, as they have visited the Halton Waste Management Site and attended a youth conference where they heard speakers such as Green Party leader Elizabeth May. The parents themselves seem to be supportive of the team's latest initiative and are pleased to see the students taking an active role in preserving the environment. As parents arrived at school to drop off their children, members of the Green Team, wearing orange vests and dust masks, were quick to hand out pamphlets and stickers, encouraging parents not to idle their engines. "I like what they are doing and I love the gas masks, it really makes a point," said Darlene Burnham, one of the parents. "I think it's wonderful, I think it builds the awareness for them early and I think in the future, this is our generation that will make things happen." All the parents shared the sentiment and were happy to see students eager to participate in the campaign. "It's the very best; more schools should do it," said Henny Baljet, as she dropped off a student. "I think they should expand it to shopping malls, video places where people sit in their car, waiting for kids to go inside and idling; groceries stores are the same, people should turn their engines off. I think it's a very good initiative." The students showed dedication in making the campaign they conceived a reality. They made posters and prepared slogans, along with organizing the morning campaign with the help of Robertson. "The organization and the preparation and the making of the posters, that's ok," said Robertson. "But they really like the visible part." The students also had the support of the Oakville Environmental Policy Department. "We provided all the information, the banner and the safety vests for the kids," said Trisha Leszczynski, Environmental Policy Coordinator. "For the teachers we make curriculum links into the actual Grade 5 curriculum, so that they can bring it into the classroom as well." The students themselves are pleased to be a part of the campaign, and enjoyed their morning of informing parents on the benefits of not idling in their vehicles. "It's really fun," said Green Team member Alex Smith. "I like the part that we don't have to go into school that early. It's a little bit later because people still come a little bit late and I think it's really important to stop global warming."
