Oakville Place is owned by Ivanhoe Cambridge and is one of 13 shopping centres owned by the company that will benefit from an agreement between Ivanhoe Cambridge and the "green" energy retailer, Bullfrog Power. "We have been looking at working on green initiatives for quite some time," said Kimberly La Ronde, marketing director of Oakville Place Mall. "Bullfrog is one of them." Bullfrog power is the first and only electricity retailer in Ontario to provide 100 percent renewable energy and has been in operation since September 2005. The electricity they provide comes from emission free sources such as wind generation or low impact hydro. Even though the shopping is not receiving all of its electricity from green energy, La Ronde feels that it is a good start for the shopping centre and its affiliates. "I think that is the whole point of getting started now, it's to do DEREK WOOLLAM / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER GOING GREEN: Pat Sampson, Oakville Place customer service supervisor, applies the new Bullfrog Power signage to one of the shopping centre's windows. whatever you can," said La Ronde. "Every little bit makes a difference, even at 30 per cent, we are going to reduce CO2 emissions by over 7,800 tons annually. So that is a pretty impressive number." The decision to purchase green energy came about after Ivanhoe Cambridge ran a test initiative with a few shopping centres out west. The company then decided to begin a three year agreement with Bullfrog. Bullfrog energy is purchased at a premium, as alternative energy costs more to produce than standard emission producing methods. "For the average home, it works out to about a dollar day more in addition to what they currently pay and for businesses it's about a 25 percent increase," said Tom Heintzman, President of Bullfrog Power. "It's about the cost of a bottle of water of a coffee per day." The power being used at Oakville Place itself is not necessarily coming directly from a green source such as a wind turbine.
