42 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday May 4, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com LOCALS ON AUSTRALIA TEAM: When the Burlington Chiefs junior A lacrosse team squares off against the Australian national team next week, there will be some familiar faces in the lineup. The surprising part is which lineup. Three Oakville players will suit up for Australia, which is playing a series of exhibition games in preparation for the World Indoor Lacrosse Champoinships in Halifax in two weeks. The Chiefs' Dylan MacDougall will switch sides to suit up for the Australians. MacDougall's grandfather is a native of Sydney, making him eligible to play for the Australians. MacDougall is currently finishing up his season with Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky. Also playing for the Australian team will be Harry and Harrison Hristopoulos of the Oakville Buzz. The game will be played Tuesday at Central Arena in Burlington, an 8 p.m. start. Having already accomplished more than most players do in their junior careers, Tavares has no shortage of inspiration for next season. Aside from leading the Generals to the Memorial Cup -- he did his best this year with 19 points in nine games to get the Generals into the second round- Tavares would love nothing more than to atone for two rare setbacks he suffered last year. After getting injured and failing to win a medal with the Canadian under-18 team, Tavares was among the final cuts from the Canadian world junior championship team that went on to win gold. "That was pretty tough. I thought I deserved a spot and I thought I could make the team but they thought I wasn't ready or wasn't right for what they wanted. It was disappointing." BURLINGTON MINOR FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION The BEST Football in Halton! He reeled off 22 goals and 39 points in his next 12 games. Included in that was a four-goal game in Belleville where he also notched the shootout winner. "That was a big game and it lit a fire under me. It was a great start for a big second half." That big second half would see him break Wayne Gretzky's OHL record for goals by a 16-year-old. "I'm not trying to break records. I'm just helping the team win," said Tavares, who creditted linemates Cal Clutterbuck and Brett MacLean for his outstanding season. "But to beat one of Wayne Gretzky's records, that was pretty special. Hopefully someday someone will break my record." Maybe. Until then, we'll have to wait for the next, next Next One.
