42 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday May 9, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Buzz undefeated after four games By Jon Kuiperij BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR Stu Brown has quickly gained an appreciation for the value of defensive lacrosse. The Oakville Buzz head coach, who admits he was less than stellar in his own end as a player, points to solid defensive play as a main reason the junior B club has opened the Ontario Lacrosse Association season with a 3-0-1 mark. "I kind of get heckled by the other coaches sometimes because I stress defence so much, whereas when I was a player I never thought defence once," said Brown, whose team earned road wins over Halton Hills (11-7), Akwesasne (8-4) and Cornwall (12-8) during the past week. "As a coach, you understand defence is key. It's been getting better with every game and we're seeing a lot more communication on the defensive end." Brown highlighted Mark Kingston, Cedric Soubry and Mike Perras as three players in particular who have helped the Buzz yield an average of 6.3 goals per game during the current winning streak. A balanced offence hasn't hurt Oakville's cause, either. Josh Barrick scored five goals, including the Buzz's first four of the game, in the win over Halton Hills, while Josh Ruys recorded a hat trick against Akwesasne. Braden Gallant led the way versus Cornwall, scoring five times and adding three assists, while Harry Hristopoulos contributed three goals and two helpers. "They are all guys who, when we put this team together, we expected to be guys that could score two goals per game," said Brown. "We know they're capable of scoring five or six in a game, too. Every game, one guy has a big game and the others are just chipping in." Also scoring goals for the Buzz the past week were Bill Mills, Dylan Gilbert, Ian Goertz, Taylor Sykes, Spencer Taugher and Soubry. Harrison Hristopoulos played goal for the Buzz against Halton Hills and Akwesasne, while Cam Watts earned the victory against Cornwall. Brown was pleased with Oakville's win in Halton Hills Thursday, when the Buzz came back from a third-period deficit to end the game with five unanswered goals. However, he was not impressed with the club's overall performance in Cornwall and Akwesasne, feeling the Buzz played down to the level of its less-talented competition. "Those games should have been a lot more comfortable than what they were," he said. "It's tough because when you get those games, it's a good opportunity to get guys into the lineup that don't ordinarily get the chance, so it is inevitable that you're going to bring the level of play down a little bit. At the same time, as a coach, you have to push them to play to their potential." The Buzz will look to push its undefeated streak to six games this weekend, when it hosts Gloucester Saturday (8 p.m.) and Nepean Sunday (2 p.m.). Both contests will be played at the Glen Abbey Recreation Centre. 50 OAKVILLE BEAVER, Wednesday, May 9, 2007 Community Notices Classified Hours: Monday to Friday 8:30am - 5:30pm E-mail: classified@haltonsearch.com Obituaries MORGAN, Gerry- The family sadly announces the passing of Gerry on Friday, May 4th, 2007 at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital.
