www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday May 11, 2007 - 43 Let the Battle of the Bands begin By Andrew Fruch SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER With International Youth Week in full swing, the Oakville Youth Advisory Committee (OYAC) has decided to organize a Battle of the Bands to celebrate local talent and youth week. It will take place on May 12. "We wanted to showcase local talent," said Cynthia Min, Chair of the OYAC. "And with Youth Week taking place, we thought a youth concert would be a good way of doing that." The OYAC is an organization run by local youth, who advise the mayor and town council on youth issues in Oakville. Their mission is to provide a voice for youth in the community. They have organized a variety of youth oriented events since they were established. Their most recent event, the Battle of the Bands, has been organized by the OYAC in partnership with the Oakville YMCA, and is at the Oakville YMCA, 410 Rebecca St. Planning for the event began last November. Although concerts are not typically associated with the most acceptable behaviour, the OYAC and the YMCA are taking steps to provide a safe environment. A high level of security will be in place. Staff will patrol the parking lot, and a bag check system will be in place. The OYAC hopes a safer environment will encourage a positive atmosphere that will draw a large number of local youth to attend the event. There will be a total of seven bands competing. The winning band will receive a prize consisting of eight free hours of recording time in a professional studio. For the OYAC, this event is its way of marking the close of youth week in an entertaining and exciting fashion for young people in Oakville International Youth Week is a celebration of the positive achievements of young people around the world, and a variety of events take place across the globe, giving youth a chance to see what other people their age are doing in their communities, and show them how to get involved. It runs between May 5 and 12. Youth week was first held in 1995 throughout a few locations across Canada. Over the years, it grew into an interna- tional event. The OYAC feels events like the battle of the bands are exactly what are needed for Halton Youth. "It's very important to have these kinds of events," said Min. "We want to deliver our message of safe social times, and this helps promote it. And hopefully it exposes kids to the committee." According to Min, if all goes well at the event, the OYAC hopes to make it an Oakville tradition, holding an annual battle of the bands. The event will begin at 5 p.m. and all are welcome. There will be an admission fee of $5. *Based on an MSRP of $15,995/$21,695 on 2007 Spectra LX MT (ST5417)/2007 Sportage LX MT (SP5517). **Leasing plans OAC provided by Kia Canada Financial Services.
