"Dorothy is so independent and having Marilyn, it helps keep her independent," said Macerollo admitting that Dunderdale's independence was dealt some severe blows after she had hip replacement surgeries, had to give up driving her beloved Dodge Omni and then lost her sister. "I enjoy it. It really gives me a sense of satisfaction and I enjoy Dorothy's company. She's good company. She always says something to make my day. She always has something funny to say and she's always in a good mood. And she's so appreciative. It's nice to be appreciated," said Allan, who believes she gets as much from her friend of four years now, as she gives. "Marilyn has a lovely way of doing things. After shopping she always stops at the bakery and says, `Do we do any treats?'" laughed Dunderdale, adding, "Having someone like this person, it's wonderful, I'm very, very lucky." Though Acclaim Health serves all communities in Halton, Macerollo coordinates Friendly Visiting for Oakville. The cases involving memory impairment, like visiting Alzheimer patients is left to Lilian Kee who co-ordinates Acclaim's Special Steps Program. The vast majority of clients in Kee's case file have some form of memory impairment from a stroke, Parkinson's disease, an aneurysm or Alzheimer's. "These clients are very difficult to find volunteers for as most people shy away from those words "memory impairment." However, the need for volunteers in this program is extremely great," said Kee. There is also a great need for caregiver respite. "Caring for a loved one with memory impairment seven days a week, twentyfour hours a day can be extremely demanding. The need is for volunteers to give a couple of hours a week so the caregiver can have some time out to possibly get their hair done or meet a friend for lunch. A break from this stressful role is key to the caregiver being able to keep their loved one living within the home," said Kee who has a very long waiting list. "I need so many more if I am going to continue to make a difference in the lives of our seniors who are struggling to maintain their independence within their home environment," said Kee.
