The Special Investigations Unit (SIU), a civilian government agency that looks into police actions resulting in serious injury or death, announced Wednesday that charges of assault causing bodily harm and unlawfully causing bodily harm were laid against Constables Joe Davis, Richard Dodds and Matthew Kohler. The charges stem from a Marine Drive standoff that took place on Nov. 25, 2006. Lawyer, Bill MacKenzie, who represented all three officers during the SIU investigation and who will continue representing Kohler against the criminal charges, spoke briefly about the events of that morning. "The officers were responding to an emergency 911 call involving weapons," he said. "That's why that Tactical Rescue Unit would be dispatched, they wouldn't normally be dispatched to a regular domestic call." The SIU alleges that upon entering the residence the officers encountered Gerry Morgan and during an altercation fired an ARWEN (Anti Riot Weapon Enfield). Helen Arsoniadis' skull was found in a garbage bag in the freezer of her Oakville penthouse apartment. It was boiled before being frozen, a Milton court heard Thursday. This is some of the evidence that will come up as her brother, 30-yearold George Arsoniadis, faces a second-degree murder charge in her July 2005 death, crown attorney Andrew Goodman said in his opening address. The jury will hear George admit to killing his sister, his defence attorney Paul O'Marra said, but his case will show "her death occurred in the course of a violent attack on George at which time he defended himself." Helen, 31, was found dismembered in the luxury upper penthouse condominium at 40 Old Mill Rd. she was renting with George. Organs, bones and her right hand were found in the apartment, the crown told the jury, while some "related items" were later recovered at an Appleby dump.
