www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday May 26, 2007 - 19 Flynn named green giant by Conservation Halton Conservation Halton (CH) recently recognized its green giants -- including Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn -- with Conservation Awards of Excellence, The awards ceremony on May 23 saw kudos handed out to people and organizations who make outstanding contributions to conservation in the Halton watershed -- across seven categories. The Citizen category included three recipients. Flynn was selected for his efforts to protect significant environmental lands in north Oakville. Juno Award-winning singer/songwriter Sarah Harmer was also selected for her efforts to promote the Niagara Escarpment as a significant natural treasure. Another citizen award was presented to Robert Curry, author of a new book on the Birds of Hamilton and Surrounding Areas. In the community category, the North Halton, South Peel and Hamilton Naturalists' Clubs were selected for their assistance and volunteer support for the Halton Natural Inventory project -- a comprehensive data base of plant and animal species in Halton. In the Stewardship category, Maggie Linton and Marius De Bruyn were selected for their leadership on the Dreamacres School Naturalization Committee at Sunningdale Public School in Oakville. Another stewardship award was presented to Kurt and Sonja Koster of Burlington for their regular clean up of Walker's Line and being conservationminded citizens who Kevin Flynn promote and practice sustainability. In the Education category, the award was given to Christine Fernandez, a teacher at St. Paul's School in Burlington, for promoting conservation awareness to students and staff. Joan Little of Burlington was placed on the conservation honour role for over 20 years of service and dedication to conservation as a director of Conservation Halton and the Niagara Escarpment Commission. Three Milton landowners were recognized for their participation in the Hamilton/Halton Watershed Stewardship Program for being great stewards of their lands. Included in this group were Patricia and Tom Weinstein, Graham and Silke Flint and Brian and Michelle Skinner, all from Milton. The final awards were presented to six participants of the Stream of Dreams watershed awareness program that combines community art by way of a colourful outdoor mural of wooden fish cut outs while learning about the value of local creeks. Participants included: Tom Thomson Public School, Burlington; Ecole Elementaire Catholique SaintPhilippe, Burlington; St. Mildred'sLightbourn School, Oakville; Gladys Speers Public School, Oakville; Lester B. Pearson High School, Burlington; and, Parks and Recreation, City of Burlington. "Residents of the watershed have inherited a rich natural legacy encompassing such features as the Niagara Escarpment, abundant wetlands, streams and many environmentally sensitive areas. One of the reasons these areas have been preserved and maintained is the fact that many groups and individuals are doing good conservation deeds," said CH chair Brian Penman. Over 110 guests and dignitaries attended the awards ceremony which also included a performance by students from Burlington's St. Paul's School. The award recipients received certificates of appreciation, copies of the coffee table book Halton: Rising, Wild and Beckoning and their names were placed on a plaque prominently displayed in the lobby of Conservation Halton's Administration Centre. Conservation Halton is the community-based environmental agency that protects, restores and manages the natural resources in its watershed. The organization has staff that includes ecologists, land use planners, engineers, foresters and educators along with a network of volunteers who are guided by a Board of Directors comprised of municipally elected and appointed citizens.
