32 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday May 26, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Owner's vacation doesn't have to be stressful for cat Change is good, except if you're a cat. If you are planning to do some traveling in the coming summer there are ways to reduce the stress your cat may experience, while you are away. Cats like to be in familiar surroundings. To make changes therefore can often cause unnecessary upset for your feline. Being boarded in a kennel or travel in particular takes your animal away from known territory. There are a number of ways to alleviate this stress for your cat. Use a paper bag or cardboard box with a hole cut out of it to provide a nice hideaway for a nervous feline at a boarding kennel. A safe place to hide, will reassure your cat. Kennel attendants at your boarding kennel will appreciate a calmer, easier to handle animal. These items can be replaced if they become soiled while the cat is boarding and they are easy to come by. Alternatively, a carrier kennel provides a solid hiding space. However, if only used when taking the cat to the veterinarian, long trips or to the kennel, the cat may learn to associate the carrier with bad things happening. Keep this in mind if you are considering making this the hiding place of choice. Consider picking a boarding kennel exclusively for cats. If a dog and cat kennel is your only option, check out the kennel to make sure that there is sufficient sound- proofing. The barking of dogs may keep your cat unsettled throughout the duration of its stay. Similarly if the dog handlers are also handling the cats, the scent of canines on the handler may cause your cat concern. To keep things as familiar as possible bring along your own litter box and cat toys. This will help your cat to acclimate to its surroundings. Other items that may help include blankets or a spray product called Feliway. Putting a cat at ease can be as simple as bringing a blanket or towel that has the cat's smell on it, or using a spray product call "Feliway": a synthetic pheromone which relaxes the cat. Veterinary hospitals that board will have this product but be aware that not all kennels are likely to have this product on hand. If not, spray some on the cat's blanket when you leave. Also try to pick a kennel that allows one-on-one social contact time with your cat, if your cat enjoys this type of interaction. In the best scenario, your travel plans and your cat's home life need not be interrupted by any stress. A reminder that cats are required by law in Oakville to have identification (name tag, Humane Society registration tag, microchip). Making sure your cat has the proper identification will help prevent the unnecessary loss of your cat should it inadvertently `escape' while in a pet sitter's care. Take the stress out of travel for both travelers and pets. Planning ahead will help alleviate your cat's anxiety while you are away.
