Sports Oakville Beaver If this past week's Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference track-and-field meet is any indication, the Abbey Park Eagles should again challenge for a number of provincial medals next month in Etobicoke. Abbey Park, which has enjoyed plenty of success at the past few Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) meets, was the overall Halton champion at the GHAC competition -- the second year in a row the school has claimed the title. The key to this year's win? Depth, particularly on the girls' side, according to Abbey Park coach Greg Dailey. "The girls' side was really strong. We had great depth in each age category, especially in the track events," Dailey said. "The boys were still pretty good, too. We had some good distance results, but what really saved us was the 400-metre runners." The Eagles will send four senior boys' 400m competitors to next week's south regional championships in St. Catharines after they all finished in the top five at the GHAC meet, the requirement to advance to regionals. Mike Rose won the race, with Brad Amos finishing third, Jimmy Tat fourth and Kevin Cox fifth. Holy Trinity's Daniel Kotwinski denied the Eagles a podium sweep, finishing second. Hardly surprisingly, Rose, Amos, Tat and Cox teamed to win the senior boys' 4x100m relay. Abbey Park also won the open girls' 4x400m, open boys' 4x400m and junior girls' 4x100m relays. "Our senior boys' 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams have outstanding shots at an (OFSAA) medal," said Dailey. "They're really one of three or four teams that are favoured. The four (Rose, Amos, Tat and Cox), if they all went to the same university, they'd be a great university team." Brandon Musselman (first in midget boys' 400m and 800m, second in 1,500m), Sam McVeen (first in midget girls' discus and shot put), Corine Smith (first in junior girls' 200m and 400m, third in 800m), Jade Johnson (first in midget girls' 800m, second in 1,500m), Stephanie Piper (first in senior girls' SPORTS EDITOR: JON KUIPERIJ Phone 905-845-3824 (ext. 255) Fax 905-337-5567 email sports@oakvillebeaver.com · SATURDAY, MAY 26, 2007 37 Eagles run their way to another Halton track-and-field title 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles), Mike Trnkus (first in junior boys' 200m, second in 400m), Julia Friesen (first in junior girls' 3,000m, third in 1,500m), Jessica Tat (first in junior girls' 300m hurdles), Taylor DiMarco (first in senior girls' triple jump) and Danny Francis (first in senior boys' 3,000m, second in 2,000m steeplechase and 1,500m) were other bright spots for Abbey Park. The Eagles weren't the only team to shine, however. Loyola finished second overall in Halton girls' competition, with Ashara Cadogan (first in midget girls' 200m, seonc in 100m, sixth in long jump) and junior girls' runners Paulina Maher, Alicia Knox and Lindsay Bryant (second, third and fourth, respectively, in the 3,000m) providing many of the Hawks' points. Loyola's senior girls' 4x100m relay team of Ashlie Tracey, Alex Pecar, Kacy Gray and Cadogan earned gold, as did senior girls' high jumper Chanelle Prerodovic. King's Christian Collegiate qualified several athletes for regionals, including Chantelle Robbertse, who won both the midget girls' 400m and high jump events. "It feels good. I'm proud of my coaches for helping me with the success," Robbertse said of winning two events at GHAC. "I think (regionals) are going to be exciting. A few of my friends will be coming there." Other locals to win events at GHAC were St. Thomas Aquinas' Colleen Hennessy (midget girls' 3,000m and 1,500m), Miana Griffiths (senior girls' 100m and 200m) and Eric Fram (junior boys' high jump), Iroquois Ridge's Eric Downing (senior boys' 800m and 1,500m) and Jeffery Park (midget boys' long, Holy Trinity's Gord Frenke (senior boys' 400m hurdles), Sean Atkinson (junior boys' shot put) and Gerald Morris (senior boys' javelin), and Blakelock's Nicole Wong (junior girls' shot put). South regionals will be held Thursday and Friday in St. Catharines, where the top four finishers in each event will advance to OFSAA. -- Local top-10 results, page 38 LIESA KORTMANN / OAKVILLE BEAVER RUNNING TO REGIONALS: Jade Johnson, who won the midget girls' 800-metre run at the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference track-and-field meet in Burlington this past week, was one of many Abbey Park Eagles to qualify for the upcoming south regional championships in St. Catharines.
