By Melanie Hennessey SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Is Halton `Naturally the Best' or `Naturally Inspired?' That was the question of the hour this week for Halton Region's three committees of council as they considered a tagline associated with the 2007-2010 Strategic Plan. While the trio supported the themes and goals set out in the document and the 2008 action plans for each of the committees, there was some debate around the plan's vision statement that starts with "Halton -- Naturally the Best." The phrase would also be used in conjunction with a new Halton Region logo. "People said it sounds arrogant," said Halton Hills Councillor Jane Fogal. Although the `naturally' reference is designed to tie into Halton's environment and natural heritage, Fogal said it doesn't convey that. "It just sounds like we rose to the top," she said. She went on to propose `Naturally Inspired' as a suitable alternative. Fogal's colleagues on the administration and finance committee expressed mixed thoughts on her proposition. While Oakville Mayor Rob Burton and Burlington Councillor Peter Thoem vouched for Fogal's idea, Burlington Councillor Rick Craven had some doubts. "I fear it's too little, too late," he said. He noted that council members had finally reached a "fragile consensus" on `Halton -- Naturally the Best', so changing it now could create a prolonged debate at council that might just lead everyone back to where they started. Fogal contended that there is time to debate the issue, since it won't be going before council until next week. But, none of the committees ended up taking a stand on the vision statement, so it'll now be up to regional council at its meeting Wednesday.
