www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday May 30, 2007 - 21 Relay for Life takes to the track Friday Relay for Life -- a signature event for the Canadian Cancer Society, Oakville Unit and one of its largest fundraisers -- is Friday. The Victory Lap to be taken by cancer survivors at 7 p.m. will officially kick off the event which will continue through the night until 7 a.m. because as the 2007 theme states, Cancer Never Sleeps. It will take place as in past years on the grounds of Appleby College where teams -- 178 and counting -- will set up camp, literally, and spend all night taking turns walking or running the track. It raised $535,000 last year and this year's sixth annual edition of the event promises to go even farther. This year's major sponsors include: Scotiabank (Event Sponsor), AGF Funds (Survivor Sponsor), Appleby College (Site Sponsor), The Oakville Beaver (Print Media Sponsor), WAVE 94.7 FM (Radio Media Sponsor) and Longo's (Food Sponsor). The Oakville Relay for Life is a community celebration of survival -- a tribute to the lives of loved ones and a night of fun, friendship and fundraising to beat cancer. The inspiring event involves teams of 10 or more people participating in the overnight, non-competitive relay. This year's relay carries the theme of celebrating the caregiver and will recognize the spouses, relatives, and tent-site set up times; parking -- off site parking locations and shuttles; registration; luminaries; survivors' -- reception and Victory Lap details; entertainment and activities; T-shirts; and People's Choice Awards -- best tent site, best costume. There is no parking on the grounds of Appleby College though parking and shuttles are available at Coronation Park and T. A. Blakelock High School. Carpooling is recommended and major delays are expected on Lakeshore Road. At the heart of the Relay is the Survivors' Victory Lap and all cancer survivors are invited to join. Survivors will be called to the Relay For Life start line at 7 p.m. Each survivor will be identified with a special t-shirt and ribbon. Survivors are invited to attend a reception at 6 p.m. and if a survivor needs assistance to complete the lap, golf carts will be available. Each registered team and survivor will receive dinner courtesy of Longo's between 5-8:30 p.m. Team registration and luminary purchase can be done up to and including event day. If people want to participate, but don't have a team, the Oakville Unit can find them one. June 6-9. Budds' SAAB cordially invites you and a guest to our 30th Anniversary Celebration June 5th, 6-8pm Plus, please join us for a week full of great Customer Events. Budd's Saab celebrates Saab's 60th anniversary with an exciting `Welcome Home' party, June 5-9 Give an aircraft engineer the task of building a car and the result is a Saab. Give a car-crazed family an opportunity to add such an innovative vehicle line to its fleet of franchises and the result is Budds' Saab. To celebrate 60 years of making aerodynamic driver-friendly vehicles that are as efficient as they are functional local Saab dealer Budds' is hosting a `Welcome Home' party June 5-9. Budds' has been a part of the Saab car family for half of the company's life 30 years. Budds' Saab is the oldest retailer in Canada to sell the Swedish-made cars. Service clinics, test-drives and myriad incentives are slated all week long, as well as prizes for customers and a special peak at a Saab race car. "Budds' feels like they have grown up with Saab," said Chris Budd who started the family dealership empire in 1973 with dad Stuart and brothers Darryl and Terry. A total of 375 employees now contribute to "the family business that service built." The flagship British Leyland franchise (which later became Jaguar) was followed by the addition of Saab, Saturn, BMW, Land Rover and Subaru to the Budds' empire. "In the 34 years of the Budds' company, it's hard to remember a day when Saab wasn't a major focus," said Chris. One of the comments heard most in the South Service Road showroom is how Saabs seem to be built around the driver, almost as if they were in the cockpit of a plane, than the cabin of a car. That's because Saab made jets before cars. The very first Saab car was hand-built by 16 aircraft engineers, only one of which had a driver's license. "Amusing as it sounds, this anecdote sums up all that makes Saab different," said Chris. But the Saab company is not one to rest on its design and technological innovation laurels. Saab is in the midst of the largest product development program in its 60-year history. Drivers can expect to fill their Saab tanks with biodiesel fuel that is 85 per cent ethanol and 15 per cent gasoline, and two-stage hybrid engines that are designed to run on 100 per cent pure renewable fuel. Today Saab builds the Saab 93 in three body styles: sedan, combi `wagon' and cabriolet. The Saab 95 also comes in a sedan and combi, as well as a 97X sport utility. Like Saab, Budds' General Manager Wayne Carter and Chris Budd pride themselves in their employees longevity and loyalty to the Budds dealership and the Saab brands. "Budds' Saab is a place where you can expect to see the person who initially sold you your vehicle, years later," said Chris.
