www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 1, 2007 - 27 YMCA celebrates outstanding youth volunteers S pring was everywhere at the YMCA of Oakville this past weekend as donors, volunteers, staff and guests gathered to celebrate the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign and three outstanding youth volunteers from the Oakville community. Every year, the Y nominates youth volunteers to receive a $300 bursary towards their education. One bursary is granted for each annual giving campaign gift of $5,000 or over within a calendar year. The 2006 bursaries were awarded on behalf of the F. K. Morrow Foundation, the Grocery Industry Foundation Together (G.I.F.T.), The Oakville Beaver/Ellis Leuschner Fund, and an anonymous donor. Four youth volunteers were nominated for the 2006 year awards: Faye Williams, Rachel Baker, Carter Hemington and Olivia Tait. Each of these young people participated in YMCA of Oakville programs and contributed to his or her community through volunteerism. Each youth also exemplified the Y's core values of respect, responsibility, honesty, caring, inclusiveness and health. Three of the young people spoke to the group, and one, Olivia, relayed her words through a substitute speaker. From Faye: "I began coming on Steve's YMCA wilderness camp trips three years ago--this summer will be my fourth year--they have been life-changing for me. From Carter: "For many years the Y has been part of my life. It started with Steve Turner on the wilderness trips. These trips have taught me the values of hard work and friendship. This is because while you cannot get along with someone in the city, while you're out on the trips, you have to settle your differences or just be miserable. The trips have opened my eyes to experience some of the most peaceful and beautiful moments of my life." From Olivia: "Everyone realizes through working at the Y that we have the power to help others and change lives in a positive way, however, it is often forgotten that being part of the Y experience also changes us for the better. The children we meet, the friendships we make and the stories we share all become part of a happy memory that makes us smile, and motivates us through experience." Thank you to the donors that made the gifts to these youth possible. And thank you to all of the youth who grow up with us at the Y. You discover yourself in connecting with other people by developing your teamwork, communication, and leadership skills." From Rachel: "Since coming from the UK I had never been exposed to volunteering, it was a completely new thing to me. Since working with others here in a volunteer capacity, I have learned the real meaning of what it's like to be part of the Canadian community. It's about sharing and giving, and through the sharing and giving, you get something back. Not goods or riches, but something far more important. I have learned that through helping others, you can gain self confidence, and an understanding of how to make things better for oth- 30 OAKVILLE 448 Speers Road Oakville 905-844-1445 www.shoppershomehealthcare.ca %* off ONE WEEK ONLY! *Discount applies to our regular prices.
