By Nikki Taylor Parent Education Manager At the OPCC, we are celebrating dads for the month of June. Dads can give so much to their children, and the positive effects of involved dads on children are often underestimated. Research shows that children who have fathers who are actively engaged in parenting have a significant impact on the healthy development of their children. Here are some of the findings. Children who grow up with involved dads: · do better in school · have less trouble with the law · have better jobs/careers · have better relationships with others · have higher self-esteem OK, you have the evidence to back up what you probably already knew. Now it's time to really get involved. · Play with your kids...a lot · Keep in touch when you are away from p y y home..a call, an email, a note will do the trick · Spend time with kids doing things they p want to do · Appreciate their strengths out loud... pp g tell them what you love about them · Teach them using love and support · Be patient...it takes a lot of time and p practice to get life right Think about the relationship you want to have with your children, then work every day to nurture and strengthen that bond. If you have any great ideas or comments about being an involved dad, send them to me at ntyalor@op-cc.ca. "Garth, it is not difficult to welcome you. The Liberal Party is a big tent and that's why Canadians gave their support to this party so many times during the 20th century from Sir Wilfrid Laurier to Paul Martin," said Dion. "Sometimes we ended up in the penalty box and we deserved it, but each time we talked about what we did good and what we did less well and we came back so strong that Canadians gave us their support again. This is what will happen at the next election." Dion also noted that with the passage of time come new challenges for the Liberal Party and the need for the party to adapt. The growing importance of environmental issues is one example of these new challenges. "For the first time humanity is considering that its relationship with the planet is not a given. Humanity has a concern, and it's a real one, that we are close to a divorce between the only planet we have and us," said Dion. "We think that it is possible to find the solutions, but for that some countries will need to take the lead. These countries must be the richest ones, the most privileged ones, best educated and I can not imagine that Canada will not be one of these." Dion also said Canada needs a respectful Prime Minister and that that is not a trait the current Prime Minister possesses. "I would like to have a respectful debate, but it is very difficult when you have a Prime Minister doing what he did today," said Dion. Dion described an incident in which he had called for the Federal Defense Minister's resignation on the grounds that he misled the House of Commons on a number of issues, including the cost of new tanks and the government's failure to cover the funeral costs for all fallen Canadian soldiers. "You know what he (Prime Minister) said? `The leader of the opposition has no right to ask for that because contrary to the Minister of Defense he never served in the military himself,' and when the deputy leader of the opposition Mr. Ignatieff asked the same thing the Prime Minister said, `the deputy leader of the opposition has no right to speak about that because he spent part of his life outside of Canada,'" said Dion. "So, if you add the two in order to have the right to criticize the Defense Minister of Canada you need to have served in the military and you have to have spent all your life in Canada. This is a complete absurdity and there is something wrong I think because then you are creating classes of Canadians. The real ones and the others, I will never do that. A real Prime Minister should bring this nation together and not divide it." That statement brought everyone in the room to their feet again showering Dion with applause. After his speech Dion took the time to pose for group pictures with everyone in the room, many of whom felt they were getting their pictures taken with the future Prime Minister of Canada. "I liked hearing what he had to say about the future of Canada in the 21st century. I think he's got it right and I'm glad he took the time to come and see us here in Oakville. He mentioned the importance of the automobile industry, both to the country and Oakville," said Oakville resident Ron Bannerman. Donna Dale admits she had her doubts about Dion when he won the leadership of the Liberal Party, but these evaporated when she heard him speak Thursday. "The things I heard tonight were the things I wanted to hear and he mentioned something very important to me, respect. Something that is sadly lacking in the government that we have today," she said. "His English is improving and I'm far more comfortable with him now. I was not a delegate for Stephane Dion, but I'm very proud to see how well he's moving forward with ideas, leadership and I think that when the writ falls we're going to be ready." Oakville resident David Gordon was no less inspired by Dion's speech. "I was impressed by the level of integrity in Stephane Dion's speech and you can definitely tell that he is someone who puts a huge value on respect and having a civilized discourse. The way he talked about how the proceedings in the House of Commons were going you can see the value he places on constructive debate. He agrees that there might be disagreement about things but you can have an actual debate about it," said Gordon. "You don't hear that from politicians so much." · · CERAMICS · · CARPET · O R I E N TA L RUGS · VINYL · · HARDWOOD · ·
