www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 8, 2007 - 17 Finding students work is challenging summer job By Andrew Fruch SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER For most youth, finding summer employment is a job in itself. But with a little help from the Halton offices of the Service Canada Centre for Youth (SCCY), students in the Halton area now stand a better chance of finding meaningful employment. With offices in Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Georgetown, the Halton SCCY provides students with resources such as providing assistance in compiling resumes and job interview techniques, while at the same time giving them access to a wide range of job postings. "Sometimes youth are sort of frustrated," said Deepak Bhathal, SCCY Youth Services Officer. "They just don't know where to start as far as their job search. Especially young high school students, they don't think they have experience, but they do. So we bring that into the forefront and we are able to construct a resume for them, help them with their resume and give them a lot of health and safety advice as well, because as a young worker they may not know their rights." The SCCY also provides services to employers looking to hire a student. Employers can post job openings, and receive information on issues such as prevailing wage rates, employment standards and labour laws. To celebrate this year's launch of the SCCY, a grand opening launch ceremony was held at the Trafalgar campus of Sheridan College on May 29. Acting Mayor of Oakville, Councilor Marc Grant attended the ceremony, and voiced his support of the SCCY and the services they provide to Halton youth. "As we continue to grow, people can't keep commuting to Toronto," said Councilor Grant. "We can't keep being a bedroom community where people go off to find jobs in other places of the GTA, we need to keep the jobs here. We need to make sure that we have the work and the facilities and the people who are willing to do the job here and I'm hoping that as this office grows and gets more people, that we can certainly start to provide "Sometimes youth are frustrated. they just don't know where to start as far as their job search. Especially young high school students, they don't think they have experience, but, they do ." Deepak Bhathal, SCCY Youth Services Officer opportunities for the youth." Employment experience for youth is essential towards allowing them to develop the skills necessary to succeed at their future careers, according to Nancy Green, Service Canada Director of the Halton-Peel region. "We're going to help young people get the experience this summer," said Green. "It might only be a month, it might only be three weeks, but when they learn to understand what an employer expects, how to get to work on time, how to be happy in the workplace, how to have some fun, make a little money, it builds that basic block on which they need for the rest of their careers." Green also believes that the SCCY is an invaluable asset for employers, as the demand for the student workforce will increase over time. "We have employers that need these young people," said Green. "And are going to need them even more desperately as they(youth) proceed through ongoing edu- cation and labour market attachments. We are preparing the future workforce." According to Bhathal, the SCCY has been fairly successful in previous years with aiding students and employers. Last year, Bhathal said the majority of the 450 positions posted through the Oakville SCCY were filled. The other Halton offices had similar results. Bhathal hopes students will take advantage of the service, which will run until the middle of August. "It gives students a place to go. Other than this, I'm not really sure what other resources they would have for their job searches in the summer," said Bhathal. "So this gives them a place to go, a place to start, and we kind of guide them along the path of how to go about finding meaningful employment." The SCCY services students from the age of 14 to 29.
