www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 8, 2007 - 7 Defence has wrapped up its case Continued from page 1 Yesterday, the court heard various results of Pollock's personality and cognitive testing on George administered in August, 2006, including three Anger Measures Tests. "He isn't aware of angry feelings and he doesn't express angry feelings," Pollock told the jury. He also said George displayed "no indication of unprovoked physical aggression." Pollock said George's results also showed a "restrictive range of emotion and emotional detachment," which he later referred to as "flat affect," meaning his emotions aren't high or low. "He showed a limited range of emotion and he was not particularly depressed, but there were signs of underlying depression in relation to his current circumstance." His notes also said George told him he was "panicked, just wanted to leave" after he caused his sister's death, that he was "scared out of my mind" and "could not believe what just happened." Something the doctor said was "not uncommon" in George's testing was his tendency to "present himself in a more positive light, downplaying certain shortcomings" but this was not so "extreme" as to invalidate the results. While George showed "an average range of intelligence," Pollock said, test results also showed he had problems in his ability to follow through on strategy after problem solving. This problem is sometimes associated with damage to the frontal lobe of the brain, the doctor said, though a brain scan didn't show any damage. Pollock told the court some damage isn't detectable in brain scans. "What I'm certain of is there are cognitive deficits," Pollock said. "There are behavioural deficits. Their origin is up in the air, but the presence of these deficits is there." The court also heard final testimony yesterday the defence rested its case about Helen's character. A psychiatrist at St. Joseph's Health Centre, Katyg Behesnilian, had several sessions with Helen in 2001 after she was kicked out of a women's shelter for breaking curfew. This was after Helen was forced to leave her home on Sept. 11, 2001 after she "punched her mom," Behesnilian said. "If charges for assault go through, she will hurt both sister and mother," Behesnilian said, referring to notes she made after seeing Helen. "She stated she wanted to kill her sister and her mother." Helen also told the psychiatrist she always had problems with her mother and threatened to kill her before, the "He showed limited range of emotion and he was not particularly depressed, but there were signs of underlying depression in relation to his current circumstance." Dr. Nathan Pollock, psychologist court heard. As Crown attorney Andrew Goodman noted in his cross-examination, Helen never mentioned any hostility toward her brother, George. "Her brother was not a concern," Behesnilian said. The doctor said Helen was "violent," "aggressive" and showing "borderline personality issues" among them narcissism, in which the person believes "it's all about them" and shows "no remorse for others." Helen also pulled her hair out an anxiety disorder, and Behesnilian noted she showed signs of bi-polarity and hypomania, among other disorders. "There is a lot of personality issues going on with this lady," she said. Helen did go to urgent care, but was referred back to Behesnilian because she "needed longer term care," the court heard. In January 2002 the doctor said Helen's ideas of killing her mother had "subsided," but that she was still paranoid, thinking "the whole world hates me." Their next session, she noted, Helen had "ideas of hurting mother and sister but has no plan," and the session following that she said she no longer wanted to kill them. After a March session, Behesnilian said she never saw Helen again, though she referred her for further counseling. The defense called its last witness Thursday and today (Friday), the Crown will call one final witness before Justice John Sproat. Closing statements are expected to be delivered Monday.
