It is but a minor achievement for the JK student at Joshua Creek Public School to claim the title as the youngest fundraiser in the annual event's history or to cinch third spot among the run's top donation generators. Madeline blames her little brother, two-year-old Sebastian, for her last place finish in 2006. That was her inaugural introduction to the one-kilometer fun run set up just for children. Sebastian slowed her down, she says, because he refused to go in a stroller, preferring to wallow in the adulation coming from the throngs of fans lined up along the route. In Madeline's race to raise $200 for the local hospital, she has already surpassed her ever-changing goal four times. With her mom's help, and plenty of generous friends and family who have contributed over the past two months, she's approaching the $1,000 mark. That's her contribution to the 11th annual OTMH Classic's overall goal to raise $140,000 for a new echocardiogram machine in the hospital's cardiology department. "It's been a team effort," said Madeline's mom Allison. The whole family participated in the Classic last year for the first time and will again this year. Even grandpa Phil Davey will be back pounding the pavement, as will Allison's coworkers from Cogeco. This is the Rays way of showing their gratitude to the hospital for the exceptional care given to the family matriarch Mabel Davey. Pneumonia landed the great grandmother in a hospital bed at OTMH. "If it wasn't for the hospital and its staff, my grandma wouldn't have made it to her 97th birthday," said Allison. Mabel is now "as healthy as a horse" and living in the West Oaks Nursing Home.
