"Across the Street and Across the World : Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things" is an opportunity for Halton area donors, volunteers and residents to learn more about the role of Red Cross volunteers. Keynote speakers at the event will include Bonnie Kearns, a Disaster Management volunteer and international delegate and Bill Ferris, a volunteer with the Disaster Management Team. Kearns has been a volunteer for more than two decades and has assisted with nine disaster relief missions including New York City in response to 9-11 and Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina. Kearns has also provided DEREK WOOLLAM / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER assistance in Afghanistan. Ferris is a long-serving Disaster Management volunteer who responded to the Peterborough Floods and was deployed to assist during the aftermath of 9-11 and Hurricane Katrina in the U.S. The event will be held Monday, June 18 from 6:308:30 p.m. in the Bronte Room of the Halton Regional Centre at 1151 Bronte Rd. The fifth annual Wheels in Motion walk is set for Sunday, beginning at the Burl-Oak Canoe Club on Water Street, winding through downtown Oakville as people wheel, run or walk to raise funds to improve the quality of life for those with spinal cord injury or other physical challenges. This year's event will specifically raise funds for the construction of a wheelchair accessible dock at the Oakville Harbour so that the physically disabled, as well as seniors and young children can take part in boating activities.
