Community stakeholders gathered Wednesday to discuss the extent of obesity in Halton and map out effective solutions to address the issue on a local basis. More than 100 community participants representing various sectors including community organizations, health professionals, school boards and private businesses attended the "Healthy Weights: Halton Takes Action" event, held at Country Heritage Park in Milton. The event was organized by Halton Region's Health Department. The keynote speaker was Dr. Mark Tremblay who has published extensively in the area of childhood obesity and is Chair of Active Healthy Kids Canada. "This event was an opportunity for key community partners to provide input for change when it comes to building healthier communities for everyone in Halton," said Gary Carr, Halton's Regional Chair, who provided opening remarks at the event. "As Halton continues to grow, we will work together with the community to create the kind of environment that will help us to achieve and maintain healthy weights." Carr referenced the Sustainable Halton planning process that deter- "Although healthy food choices and quality physical activity are important contributors to healthy wights, we have to acknowledge the causes of obesity are often complex. There is no easy solution to produce sustainable long-term change." Dr. Robert Nosal, Halton Medical Officer of Health mines where and how Halton will grow to 2031. It involves looking at the ways in which Halton neighbourhoods are designed as this can impact the ability of a community to be healthy. Dr. Bob Nosal, Halton's Medical Officer of Health, presented statistics which indicated that obesity rates among children and youth in Halton are increasing. In addition, half of Halton adults are either overweight (37 per cent) or obese (13 per cent), statistics which are consistent with provincial and national figures. "Although healthy food choices and quality physical activity are important contributors to healthy weights, we have to acknowledge that the causes of obesity are often complex," said Nosal. "There is no easy solution to produce sustainable long-term change. However, I believe we have started to take steps in the right direction." Choices4Health, Halton's Healthy Living Network, will review the results of the day and determine next steps. These results will be available to attendees and the public in July 2007.
