YMCAFALL BASKETBALL LEAGUES Excitement levels are high in the Y Sports group as the YBC/ WYBC basketball leagues get ready for lots of fantastic changes for the fall 2007/2008 season! Playing a game of golf can do more than simply improve your score or hone your technique; it can also make a difference in the community. That's thanks to a charity golf tournament presented by the Magnes Group. The Premier Charity Golf Tournament, now in its ninth year, is Thursday, June 21. The tourney has grown into a fundraising tradition for Oakville residents. The goal for this year's tournament is $40,000, which will be spread out among a number of local charities. "The tournament has grown substantially over the last few years," said Don Vince, one of the tournament organizers. "So, as we lurched forward, we didn't want to leave anyone behind." The majority of the proceeds raised from the tournament will be donated to Ian Anderson House, an in-residence hospice service for Halton and Peel regions. Ian Anderson House provides quality palliative care for cancer victims free of charge and gives round-the-clock care in a home-like environment. Other charities to benefit from the tournament include Camp Trillium, which provides more than 50 summer programs for children living with cancer. The Children's Aid Foundation of Halton, an agency that assists abused and neglected children, and Community Living Oakville, an organization that helps people with developmental disabilities participate in all elements of the community, will also benefit. The tournament is taking place at scenic Heron Point Golf Links in Ancaster. There is a limited number of spots available for the tournament -- four foursome packages remain at a cost of $1,800 for each package. A total of 140 players are expected to take part in the tournament. Also, a limited number of sponsorships are still available at a cost of $300. A number of sponsors have stepped up to donate towards the charity golf tournament, but it attracts certain repeat sponsors who have donated year after year such as Budds' Imported Cars, an Oakvillebased business. "We would really like to thank Budds," said Vince. "They have been very generous towards the tournament. I think they have been with us every year since the first tournament." In addition to the 18-hole competition, the tournament will also play host to a number of other events such as a `Hole-inOne' competition, a putting contest, live auction and raffle. Tournament organizers hope the day will not only be fun, but leave a positive mark on the community.
