Turn the public green By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The fight against global warming can be pursued in a kinder and gentler way by making the public aware of the importance and beauty of the natural world in which they live. This was the theme of a lecture given by the Head of Scientific Development at the Royal Botanical Garden, Dr. David Galbraith, at the Mayor's Business Breakfast on Thursday. Before Oakville's business and government leaders, Galbraith declared that there are alternatives to frightening people when promoting planetfriendly activities. "We can change our clothes, our hairstyle, some of us can change our weight more easily than others, we can even change our gender but we can't change our species. From the time we are conceived, until the moment we pass away, we have a human genome, and so to be told that humans are the problem is very harsh," said Galbraith. "I don't want to make anyone feel guilty for anything today other than eating too much bacon," he joked. The alternative Galbraith sees to spurring environmental involvement through guilt and fear is to make people fall in love with nature so they will want to protect it. The best way to do this is to get people to go somewhere they will be surrounded by it. Botanical gardens are one example. "Botanical gardens are institutions holding documented collections of living plants for the purposes of scientific research, conservation, display and education," said Galbraith. To get people into these institutions and then to get them involved in social action around conservation, Galbraith turns to a program called the Conservation Continuum. "First you have to provide intrigue and excitement to the public. If you provide a heavy message about conservation and the survival of the world "First you have to provide intrigue and excitement to the public. You've got to tickle the public's interest." Dr. David Galbraith Royal Botanical Gardens people aren't going to want to come see you," he said. "You've got to tickle the public's interest." Galbraith captured the crowd's attention when he dissected the origin of every fruit and vegetable the audience consumed during their breakfast. "This morning we enjoyed strawberries and melon from North America. We also enjoyed kiwi fruit," said Galbraith who noted the kiwi's real name is Chinese gooseberry thanks to its Chinese origin. "The wheat in our pancakes came from the Middle East, the potatoes from South America, the tea from China and I could go on and on. All of those are plants, all have stories to tell about human exploration, economic development, nutrition and their evolutionary history." $ 25 OFF Any Rental! Any Time!
