www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 22, 2007 - 9 Lemay's on the road again in Tour for Kids By Andrew Fruch SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Dr. Terry Lemay has seen first hand just how much childhood cancer can devastate a life, and rob a child of many years that should be spent living a carefree existence that is the right of all children. His 11 year-old nephew Liam was diagnosed with Stage IV Neuroblastoma at age 5. But through a group of camps dedicated to providing some of the joys of childhood for those battling cancer, Liam has had the opportunity to escape from the confines of the terrible disease and experience what youth should be. "He went to a couple of their camps, and it has made a world of difference," said Lemay, who practices acupuncture at the Oakville Massage and Wellness Centre, located at 323 Kerr St. But keeping these camps open requires the support of communities and individuals, as they do not receive ongoing federal or provincial funding. For this reason, an event known as Tour For Kids has been organized for the last three years, with the mission of keeping the camps open for the benefit of 3,200 children. Tour For Kids is a four-day cycling event, where participants raise funds through pledges that go towards keeping Camp Quality, Camp Trillium and Camp Oochigeas operational. Since the start of May, in order to raise his pledge of $5,000, Lemay has been donating his new patient assessment fee of $75 towards Tour For Kids, a process he will continue to do until the event takes place from August 16 to 19. Along with the fee donations, Lemay will be riding in Tour For Kids, and over two days he will bike a total of 400 km. "It's for a good cause," said Lemay. "It is a very minimal thing for me to do, I don' t mind giving my time." "When a child is hit, the whole family is hit, and the child is in the hospital for so long. So for them to get away from the clinical atmosphere and just be a child again, it's a wonderful thing." Dr. Terry Lemay Lemay feels the camps themselves can play an important role in the future of the children who attend them. "When a child is hit, the whole family is hit, and the child is in the hospital for so long. So for them to get away from the clinical atmosphere and just be a child again, it's a wonderful thing," said Lemay. "It gives them spirited moral, more fight for the fight." With almost $1,000 raised in one month, Lemay believes he will be able to meet his total. Along with the event that is taking place in August, Tour For Kids will also be holding another event of the same nature in Alberta, which will take place in July. Over the last three years, Tour For Kids and its participants have raised over $1.7 million for the camps. It has also become one of the premiere cycling events in the province of Ontario. Besides the assessment fee, Dr. Lemay would appreciate any extra donations. These donations can be made online at the Tour For Kids website, located at www.tourforkids.com, which allows for general donations to the charity or specific pledge donations to riders. SAVE THANKS: Dr. Terry Lemay with his nephew, Liam Andres, 11, who was diagnosed with Stage IV Neuroblastoma at the age of five. Lemay thanks Duke's Cycle on Queen Street in Toronto for donating all the accessories on his new bike. Although this will be his first year participating in the Tour for Kids event, Lemay is no stranger to cycling, and he is also already familiar with Tour for Kids as his brother-in-law has participated in the event every year since its inception.
