10 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 22, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Oakville girl to receive Fire Safety Action Award Twelve-year-old Sidney Samborski of Oakville will receive a Fire Safety Action Award from the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council on June 28 in Toronto. Each year Fire Safety Action Awards are awarded to young children and teenagers who have actively demonstrated fire safety behaviours they have learned. On Jan. 24, Sidney had just returned home from school and was working on the computer in her family's living room. Her mother, Gloria, was in the same room when they both heard a smoke alarm and both began to smell smoke. Gloria panicked and called her husband on the telephone. However, Sidney kept her composure and tried to calm her mother. When her mother suggested an escape from the home, Sidney insisted on another route. They needed to escape from the house through the front door, a few steps away. As they moved toward the door, Sidney grabbed the family dog, Max, and a blanket to cover his face, as he had a respiratory illness. Once outside, they called 911 from a cell phone. A fire investigation later determined that an electric heating pad, plugged into an electrical outlet in the basement, had malfunctioned and had been the source of the fire. The basement had been the temporary home of a family guest. Sidney was taught fire safety lessons at her school Saint James Roman Catholic School and during a day camp last summer. The day camp was hosted by the Halton Region Health Department and the Canadian Red Cross and provided lessons on life safety. "Sidney was able to recognize the emergency and stay calm," said Fire Marshal Pat Burke.
