www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 22, 2007 - 19 Little note goes a long way to cleaning up war memorial The vigilance of one Oakville resident was all it took to get the Trafalgar War Memorial, on Oak Park Boulevard, looking pristine once more. After visiting the memorial a B. Sparre wrote a letter to The Oakville Beaver and the department of Parks, Recreation and Culture calling for something to be done about its unacceptable condition. "Upon taking a visitor from overseas to see the Trafalgar War Memorial on Oak Park Boulevard on Saturday, I was disgusted and embarrassed to see the condition of the two small garden plots on each side of the memorial. "It was difficult to see what was actually planted in there as a crop of very healthy thistles had overtaken the two plots. "Surely the parks department could find time to occasionally clean up these plots as a further tribute to those who served our country during the wars. The grass surrounding the memorial has been kept well tended, but the two small gardens are an eyesore. If there is nobody available to keep them free of weeds, perhaps they should be removed and replaced by grass!" After receiving this letter, the Town did not hesitate in performing the necessary maintenance. "As soon as I heard that it was an "It was well maintained right up until the fall, but it just didn't get looked at this spring and that won't be happening again." Chris Mark, Director of Parks and Open Space issue I immediately contacted staff and had them go out there and clean it up and maintain it in a condition that it should be," said the Director of Parks and Open Space, Chris Mark. "I think we actually were out there the same day that we received the letter from the resident which I did respond to and apologize and I thanked her for bringing it to my attention." Mark says the neglect of the gardens was a mistake and finds it encouraging that someone was willing to speak up after finding it. "It was an oversight on our staff's part in not getting out there early enough in the spring to maintain those two garden plots. The grass has been maintained but we just didn't get out there in time to clean up the weeds," he said. "It was well maintained right up until the fall, but it just didn't get looked at this spring and that won't be happening again."
