www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday June 30, 2007 - 9 Time to work together Continued from page 6 Liberal leader Stéphane Dion introduced Balancing our Carbon Budget, our sweeping blueprint on how to put Canada's large industrial emitters on a `carbon budget,' help Canada honour its Kyoto commitment and trigger a significant reinvestment in job-rich green technologies. Similarly, we challenged Prime Minister Stephen Harper to reject an `intensity-based' approach that would actually permit greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from our largest industries to increase, rather than decrease. The Liberals also introduced a competitiveness strategy focused on investing in education and innovation, helping Canadian businesses access and succeed in global emerging markets, and ensuring the competitiveness of Canada's tax regime. To this end we were instrumental in pressuring the government to reverse its disastrous position on corporate interest deductibility that threatened to undermine our businesses on the global stage, open them up to foreign takeovers and cost us jobs at home. We also brought forward a crime and justice package that would increase crime prevention activities, put more police officers on the streets and more prosecutors in the courts, strengthen the laws around Internet luring and identity theft, and tighten bail conditions for serious gun crimes. Unfortunately, for the most part, Prime Minister Harper is trying to govern as if Canadians had given him a majority. When parliament resumes in the fall, it is incumbent upon Mr. Harper to bring forward a renewed policy agenda and to show a willingness to work with other parties rather than against them. If he does not, we will once again endure a frustrating year and another opportunity for real Canadian progress will be lost. However, we in the Official Opposition will continue to hold the Government to account and to modify and moderate their more extreme policy initiatives. I'd like to take this opportunity as summer begins to wish you and your family a safe and healthy holiday season.
