8- The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 6, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Halton residents still under outdoor watering ban By Melanie Hennessey SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER A mandatory outdoor water ban is still in place for the entire region and is expected to remain in effect until at least early next week. The ban, which started a little over a week ago, was deemed necessary to ensure an adequate supply of water remains in the Region's reservoirs during the dry weather for fire protection and essential household needs. Commissioner of Planning and Public Works Peter Crockett told a Region committee Wednesday that the water supplies in Milton and Halton Hills are stressed, with the most acutely affected area being Georgetown. Both municipalities are serviced by a well-based groundwater system, which is more sensitive to the dry weather. The newer parts of Milton actually get water from Lake Ontario through the Big Pipe. While Burlington Councillor John Taylor attempted Wednesday to get the ban lifted for residents on the lake-based water system in south Halton, his suggestion garnered little support from his planning and public works committee colleagues. Taylor argued the region-wide ban doesn't make sense when Halton is projecting a shortfall this year in water and wastewater revenues that could be up to $10 million. Regional Chair Gary Carr pointed out that a partial ban could create some confusion, since some residents in Milton are also on the lake-based water system. Meanwhile, Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette emphasized that Halton does strive to be conservative with water. "I just wouldn't want to see the message get mixed," he said. Oakville Councillor Allan Elgar shared similar sentiments. "I think it's better to keep everyone mindful that water is a scarce commodity," he said. Burlington Councillor Jack Dennison was the only one to voice support for Taylor's proposition. He said the region-wide ban could have a negative impact from a development point of view if people looking to buy a home or locate a business in Halton are aware of the restriction. Since there was no consensus around the table, no action was taken on the issue. Halton Environmental Services Director Kiyoshi Oka said the dry weather does affect the demand for water all across the region. He said staff is currently evaluating the situation to determine if the restriction can be lifted or reduced next week. "We are seeing a positive impact from the ban," he noted. While the rainfall Wednesday wasn't substantial, Oka said any precipitation helps. As long as the ban is in place, residents are to refrain from watering their lawns and washing their cars and driveways. Flower and vegetable gardens are to be watered by hand and only as needed. Recently-laid sod is exempt from the restrictions. OAKVILLE - Celebrating 150 years!
