NOTICE OF BY-LAW PASSING General Amendments to Comprehensive Zoning By-law 1984-63 Monday, March 26, 200 7 TOWN INITIATED Town Wide 7:30 p.m. gar Road File No. 42.03.74 C ouncil C hambers, Town Hall - 1225 Trafal 2007 Operating and Capital Budget s Halton Regional Police are joining forces with Peel Regional Police and the Ministry of Transportation and Environment to combat the growing threat of street racing that has begun to emerge in the Halton area. During a Thursday press conference at the Oakville Police Station, officers stated that Project E.R.A.S.E. (Eliminate Racing Activity on Streets Everywhere), a program that seeks to eradicate street racing through a combination of educational awareness and strategic enforcement, was underway in Halton by cracking down poor driving behaviours that evening. In that Thursday night blitz, police pulled over 205 vehicles and issued 107 tickets for various traffic issues. "They were quite successful in doing some street level enforcement for poor driving habits, but as for the racing, I don't think we caught anyone racing per say, which is pretty difficult to do," said Sergeant Steve MacDonald, of the Halton Regional Police. Despite the lack of street racers caught Thursday, MacDonald feels it was a good night's work as the aim of Project E.R.A.S.E is to deter street racing by showing a significant police presence in areas where races are known to take place. "Halton is taking a proactive approach. We've got a number of officers coming out tonight along with the ministry and along with Peel," said MacDonald in the moments leading up to the first enforcement blitz. "We're having problems along the border and we just want to see how enforcement goes so we can slow this down and not have any of these tragedies here in the Halton and Peel area." Street racing has proven to be particularly lethal on the GTA's busy roads, with 38 people being killed as a direct result of street racing since 1999.
