Health and Long-Term Care Minister George Smitherman also announced the McGuinty government will give $2.5 million to plan for renovations and to provide services at the Milton site. "The Halton area is thriving, so our government is investing in healthcare services so they can grow alongside the local population," Smitherman told a group of healthcare officials gathered at the Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH). The minister, standing between two signs marking where the new Oakville hospital will be built, said "the money will flow now" to "enhance the capacity of healthcare both here and in Milton." The Milton District Hospital will receive $1.5 million to support plans for upgrades and expansion, and an additional $1 million for the Halton Healthcare Services Corporation to meet the current demand for services in the growing town. "It will be a very, very exciting period of time here in Halton, as the quality of the health care services here continue to improve," Smitherman said. The full $15 million announced goes to the Halton Healthcare Corporation, which leads the planning and expansion efforts. "This is tremendous news for our communi- "It will be a very, very exciting period of time here in halton, as the quality of the health care services here continues to improve." "The capital funding will allow us to continue our planning efforts for the new Oakville hospital and initiates the planning for the much-needed expansion of the Milton District Hospital." Though details of what Oakville's new hospital will feature are not yet known, Oliver said it will be an "environmentally-friendly" facility "offering first-rate care in an innovative environment." Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn, who was also on hand, said he expects the town will plan the new hospital "so it serves the community more as a hub." The planning and design for a big project like a hospital generally accounts for about 15 per cent of the total cost, according to the Health and Long-Term Care minister. "It's essential to how the site develops," Flynn said. And the planning is happening now because while the construction may not start for another three years, Flynn says that's sooner than it seems. "We're scrambling as fast as we can to get it built, because there's so much work to do," he said. "We start to run out of time."
