www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 13, 2007 - 19 DOWNTOWN THIS WEEK Foot Solutions offers a Nordic Walking Clinic this Saturday at the Downtown store Rest assured that trail of people you see walking out of Foot Solutions, at 213 Lakeshore Rd. E., this Saturday with what looks like ski poles in hand, are not confused winter worshippers in search of a snowy slope. Led by certified Nordic Walking instructor Sue Potter, they are exercising their legs, arms and chest in a total body workout. The poles they are using help support their gait and take the impact of each footstep off of the lower body. Using these trekking aides also improves posture and increases caloric burn, more than just walking does, by at least 20 per cent and up to 48 per cent. Foot Solutions owner Marco Tome first met Potter when she came into his shop looking for specialized footwear that would alleviate the soreness she experienced from an arthritic knee. Tome fit her with a pair of Chung Shi shoes and encouraged she take up Nordic Walking. "She loved it so much, that she earned her coaching certificate," said Tome. So this Saturday (July 14), just as Tome did for Potter, she too is hoping to create some fellow converts to this type of exercise. The free Nordic Walking demonstration clinic begins at 11 a.m. Tome urges those interested to call ahead (905.339.3668) and register, as there are a limited number of poles available. To follow up, Foot Solutions is offering a seven-week long Nordic Pole Walking clinic. Each session costs $12 but those who sign up Saturday will get seven lessons for the price of five, said Tome. The roots of Nordic Walking trace back more than 75 years, to Finland, where cross-country skiers keen to train in summer mimicked the elements of their beloved winter sport by devising these trekking poles. Studies now show that this simple aerobic exercise has great health benefits in increasing cardiovascular activity and enhancing muscle strength.
