www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday July 18, 2007 - 13 Oakville veterans sought for documentary Oakville's veterans are invited to take part in a documentary series to capture Canadian war veterans in their own words. Award-winning filmmaker Larry Cappetto is heading up the project, entitled Lest they be Forgotten Canada, to honour the remembrances of today's war veterans. He has produced several unique American war documentaries that capture the memories of World War II veterans in their own words. Cappetto is now coming back to Canada to finish producing a Canadian war documentary by interviewing Canadian war veterans. He'll be in Toronto and Brampton this month to conduct interviews. Cappetto's series of documentaries are historically important as Canada's war veterans are aging. His films are unusual in that the entire narrative is drawn from the memories and monologues of today's veterans. The result is a unique and limited opportunity to compile the stories of the Canadian veterans, and to communicate to subsequent generations the first-hand accounts of their service to their country. "I named this series Lest They Be Forgotten because this generation of veterans sacrificed so much, but asked so little," said Cappetto. "What has been missing," he added, "is to hear the story of their patriotism, sacrifice, and love of country in their words. "I purposefully seek to document and honour their remembrances and memories without editorial comment." The entire film series and presentations are an opportunity to publicly acknowledge, on local and national levels, the many contributions and sacrifices of veterans, and to instill in people the pride and gratitude the veterans deserve. Cappetto's documentaries have already been shown in many cities across the U.S. and are now available through his website, www.veteranshistory.org. Cappetto's work to date includes three documentaries; D-Day, June 6, 1944, Omaha Beach and two works on the battle of Iwo Jima. Background and clips of the work can be seen on the website. "My goal in coming to Canada is to produce, Lest They Be Forgotten Canada," Cappetto said. The film is slated to be released on Remembrance Day, Nov. 11, 2007. Cappetto will be in Brampton on July 19, and in Weston on July 20 and 21 to interview Canadian war veterans. Interested veterans are asked to contact either Cappetto or Cameron Ward, of Ward Funeral Homes. Ward Funeral Homes is the official sponsor and host of this event.
