18 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday July 18, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Rabbi ready to energize congregation Oakville's Shaarei-Beth El Congregation has welcomed new Rabbi Stephen Wise -- he's a hockey player, just returned from Florida and became a dad for the third time -- on Mother's Day. Wise's appointment became official June 30. Leaving the local congregation was Rabbi Paul Sidlofsky, who is taking up residency as the Rabbi-Educator at Baltimore Hebrew Congregation in Baltimore, Maryland. Before joining Shaarei-Beth El, Wise, a Toronto native, spent two years as the assistant rabbi at Temple Beth El in Boca "He just loves being Jewish, and he transits that love for Judaism to everything he does and to everyone he meets." Rabbi Dan Levin, Temple Beth El, Boca Raton, Florida Raton, Florida. He was referred to as the best, if not only, hockey-playing rabbi in Palm Beach County. His tenure at Temple Beth El saw him work with and be mentored by Senior Rabbi Dan Levin. Great workmanship." - Dianne & Derek Scott "The thing about Stephen that has been such a joy to work with is that he just loves being Jewish, and he transmits that love for Judaism to everything he does and to everyone he meets," Levin said. While Wise enjoyed his time in Florida, he is excited about joining the Shaarei-Beth El community and, in his words, ". . . to move back to Canada, to be close to family and friends who live all across the Toronto area, and to energize the Jewish community of Halton." Ordained by the Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion in May of 2005, Wise has focused much of his rabbinate in striving passionately to connect Jews of all ages with Judaism. Whether through prayer services, learning, or social action, Wise believes each presents a gateway to a stronger Jewish identity. In his new position as rabbi of Shaarei-Beth El, Wise is focused on leading meaningful worship experiences for all, teaching thought-provoking courses for adults and children, providing inspiring programming and being a catalyst for social activism. Wise was born in Toronto and grew up at Holy Blossom Temple. While at the University of Toronto, he majored in History and then went on to receive a Masters degree in Jewish Communal Service with a focus in Rabbi Stephen Wise Jewish Education through the Hornstein Program at Brandeis University. Following graduation from Brandeis, Wise served for two years as the full-time Youth Educator at Temple Shir Tikvah in Wayland, MA and then spent a year in Israel to begin his rabbinic studies, continuing them in New York City. Wise and his wife, Cheryl, have three children, three-year old Jacob, one-year old Talia, and Alexa who was born Mother's Day. Shaarei-Beth El is a reform congregation in Oakville and has been the centre of Jewish life in Halton Region for over 50 years. A special kiddush luncheon for Wise's first Shabbat with the synagogue was held, though his installation is planned for the fall. Synagogue members, about 135 families, live in Halton, Hamilton and Toronto. As a Reform congregation with a traditional background, a spirit of openness and acceptance characterizes the congregation. Members come from varying Jewish and mixed backgrounds and the synagogue's philosophy allows for a variety of people to feel comfortable. It offers numerous programs and worship services. In addition to weekly Shabbat (Saturday) morning services, Shaarei-Beth El holds monthly Friday night services as well as services for various Jewish holidays observed during the year. It also hosts social get-togethers and adult education discussion groups, as well as providing a Religious and Hebrew School program. The school provides a Jewish education for children in pre-Kindergarten to Grade 8. Teens in the synagogue are members of a very active youth group, participating in social events and charitable projects as well as kallot (weekend trips) with other synagogues in the region (which includes Ontario, New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio). The synagogue sits on more than an acre of finely-landscaped grounds and in addition to the sanctuary/social hall, has a large foyer, kosher banquet facilities, a library meeting room and offices.
