26 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday July 18, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Goodyear's New Eagle F1 - an ultra-high performance tire for all seasons Where better to launch a new performance tire than on a race track? And, when it comes to the newest Goodyear Eagle, where better than Daytona, the site of the original Eagle debut 27 years ago. Now, normally, a wet racetrack at Daytona would rule out any kind of performance testing. But this was the launch of the Eagle F1 All Season, an ambitious tire aimed squarely at the seemingly divergent goals of high performance ability and all weather traction. And to meet those goals Goodyear has pulled out all the stops with a blended recipe of their latest developments and technologies. Any writer knows you need a good "hook" to catch the reader's attention. Maybe that applies to tire companies as well because, with their last few tire launches, Goodyear has managed to capture the market's attention with catchy brand names and exotic ingredients like Kevlar, "volcanic sand" and carbon fibre. And the new Eagle F1 All Season not only blends the buzz words, it takes advantage of the trickle down of tech*Based on an MSRP of $21,695/$15,995/$21,895 on 2007 Sportage LX MT (SP5517)/2007 Spectra LX MT (ST5417)/2007 Magentis LX MT (MS5417). The key to the Eagle F1 All Season's performance side, according to Goodyear, is its high-tech carbon fibre-reinforced inner and outer sidewalls. We've all heard about carbon fibre and we can freely associate its lightweight strength with everything from sports equipment to yacht hulls and the protective tubs of race car cockpits. Using those same stonger-and-lighter-than-steel qualities, carbon fibre helps stiffen both sides of the new Eagle F1 to help maintain enhanced contact with the road during hard cornering. "Those tiny micro-scale fibres provide macro-scale performance," according to Jay Robinson, lead engineer on the project. The use of carbon fibre in a tire first debuted last year in Goodyear's ResponsEdge lineup. The Eagle f1 All Seeason also harnesses an Ultra High Performance Zone with aggressive shoulder blocks and a continuous center rib to provide more performance control from the edges and middle of the tire. And, sticking to the performance side of the equation, the Eagle F1 also gets an assist from Goodyear's patented TredLock Technology, consisting of a series of cups and domes interspersed between the tread grooves. Twist the tire through a corner and the forces of the turn interlocks those cups and domes together, locking and stiffening the tread to keep more rubber on the road. Earning its "All Season" branding, the new Eagle F1 was also designed to offer traction in the rain, and even in limited amounts of snow, through Aquachutes that funnel water away. This zone, of course, traces its development back to the original Aquatred tire and its recent TripleTred offspring. According to Bob Toth, Goodyear's marketing manager, auto tires, "The Eagle F1 line of ultra-high performance tires is synonymous with precise control, crisp handling and effective dry traction. The award-winning Eagle F1 GS-D3 brought these performance attributes to wet roads. And now, the new Eagle F1 All Season completes the circle by offering traction on dry, wet and snow-covered roads." Other notable features of the new Eagle F1 All Season include: · A sound and stiffness insulating layer made with DuPont KEVLAR, adapted from the Fortera SilentArmor lineup. · A silica tread compound. · Goodyear's PermaBlack Compound, an innovation that debuted with the 2003 launch of the Assurance linep and that helps keep the sidewall looking new throughout the life of the tire. · A rim flange protector that was first seen on Fortera tires. · Dual zone directional tread. The new Eagle F1 All Season will be coming to Canadian stores this July with an initial offering of 22 sizes, followed by a further 16 sizes in October. ,7 1 50 BONUS LEASE FOR PER MO.
