Samplonius won the 25-kilometre women's cycling time trial in 26 minutes, 23.70 seconds giving her a comfortable one minute, 28 second victory over Mexico's Alessandre Grassi-Herrera "I'm getting towards the end of my career and I'm going to take all these opportunities I can. I love it," Samplonius told the Toronto Star. "You can't help but get caught up in the whole experience and atmosphere, standing up on a podium and hearing the national anthem play." The 39-year-old retired in 2005 but came back to win the Canadian time trial title earlier this month. Samplonius, who now lives in Montreal, will also compete in next Saturday's road race. She won silver medals at the Commonwealth Games and world championships in 1994. Jones narrowly misses medal Oakville's Kyle Jones just missed the podium in Sunday's men's triathlon at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro. Jones was gaining on the leaders after posting the third best run time but finished just nine seconds behind Brazil's Juraci Moreira, who won the bronze medal. Andy Potts of the U.S. won the gold in one hour, 52 minutes and 31 seconds. Brent McMahon of Victoria, B.C. was second in 1:52:38. Moreira was third in 1:52:54. Jones finished in 1:53:05. McMahon credited Jones with helping him win his medal after he slowed the pace of the main group of runners as McMahon made a break from the pack. Lang, Matheson net goals Kara Lang's reconstructed knee appears to be holding up well. She scored three times in Monday's 4-0 victory over Ecuador as the Canadian women's soccer team improved its record to 2-0 at the Pan Am Games. Lang, who missed a year after tearing her ACL at a national team training camp last year, scored goals six minutes apart in the opening half after Andrea Neil had opened the scoring. Lang scored again in the second half for her third senior national team hat trick. Oakville's Diana Matheson ignited a five-goal second half as Canada opened the tournament with a 7-0 victory over Uruguay Saturday. Rhian Wilkinson sent Matheson in alone on the Uruguay net in the second half to give Canada a 3-0 advantage. Canada added four more goals in the final 15 minutes. Canada plays Jamaica today (Wednesday) and faces the host Brazil on Friday. The top two teams from their pool will advance to the semifinals.
