24 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 27, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Discover magic of lost worlds at the library K ids and parents are busily discovering the Lost Worlds of this year's TD Summer Reading Club at the Oakville Public Library. There's still time to sign up -- Aug. 20 is the last day for reporting. This program offers families fun, free activities to encourage children to read and continue developing their literacy skills throughout the summer. Research has shown that the playful approach of these clubs is extremely effective in getting more children to increase their reading skills. The Oakville Public Library is proud to provide children in the community with the opportunity to participate in the program. Last year, more than 4,000 kids read more than 27,000 books. Thanks to the sponsors of this year's Summer Reading Club -- McDonald's Restaurants of Oakville, YMCA of Oakville and Friends of the Oakville Public Library -- participating children are enjoying great prizes and incentives as they go through the program. This year's theme Lost Worlds features civilizations from the past. Award-winning Canadian artist, Joe Weissmann, was chosen to design the eye-catching illustration on the program materials. Weissman visited the Glen Abbey branch on July 6 to talk to children about how he created the artwork for this year's club. He also gave a drawing workshop. In rolling out the program to the community, the library has organized many Lost Worlds-themed drop-in programs over the summer, including the following upcoming free drop-in events: Indiana Jones' Quest for Adventure on July 30 from 10 a.m. to noon at the White Oaks branch. Relic Hunters wanted. Follow the clues through the library to uncover ancient relics and long-hidden treasure. Beware, there will be obstacles to overcome, insects and snakes to avoid and be very careful where you step the path could disappear when you least expect it. This program is for children ages 5-10. Finding Neverland on Aug. 13 from 1-3 p.m. at the White Oaks branch. Join the lost boys for a rollicking adventure in Neverland. Watch out for the crocodile! All ages are welcome. Dinosaur Daze on Aug. 15 from 2-4 p.m. at the Glen Abbey branch. Do you love these creatures? Come explore the library and participate in searches, games dino digs and lots of dinosaur fun. This program is for children ages 5-10. We sincerely thank McDonald's Restaurants of Oakville, YMCA of Oakville and Friends of the Public Library for their support this year. "Corporate partnerships like these make programs like Summer Reading possible," says Nicole Paterson, manager of marketing and development.
