www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday August 3, 2007 - 15 Teaming up for Terry Fox Foundation By Krissie Rutherford OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF A local bank and law firm are teaming up to support the Terry Fox Foundation. For the eighth year running, Oakville's Scotia McLeod will be hosting a fundraising barbecue in partnership with the O'Connor MacLeod Hanna LLP. The barbecue will take place on Thursday, Aug. 16 from noon2 p.m. at the local Scotia McLeod office, 700 Kerr St. The fundraising goal is $20,000. "We've had people affected by cancer, I mean it's pretty tough to find someone that hasn't been affected by cancer," said Scotia McLeod branch manager Rod White of the bank's rea- sons for supporting the cause. "It's just close to home, that's probably the biggest part of it." White also applauded the Terry Fox Foundation, which sees 87 cents of every dollar go directly to cancer research funding, with 10 cents devoted to fundraising and three to administration. "We are very impressed with how the foundation is run," White said. "The money raised definitely gets to the right places." National Director of the Terry Fox Foundation Darryl Fox will attend the event. White says they asked Fox to come out the first year and he has been there every year since. Over the last seven years, Scotia McLeod has raised $125,000 for the cause. Once again this year, whatever is raised at the barbecue, Scotiabank will match, White says. The bank is also paying for the tent rental, T-shirts and more. The barbecue costs $15 and will feature not only burgers, drinks, chips and snacks, but also a bake sale, raffle and silent auction with prizes donated from local businesses. Every penny raised will go to the Terry Fox Foundation. White says they expect about 250 people to attend the barbecue, including Mayor Rob Burton, Town staff and the president of the Canadian Cancer Society's Oakville chapter, Joan Gibb. "It's sort of looked at as the kick- off to the Terry Fox run for Oakville," White said, adding many of the bank's employees will be participating in the run.
