The Southern Ontario Chamber Music Institute (SOCMI) presents its annual Summer Concert Series in partnership with three downtown Oakville churches and Appleby College. The Penderecki String Quartet will perform works by Beethoven, Haydn and Janacek on Aug. 9 at St. Andrew's Church, 47 Reynolds St.; the Tokai String Quartet offers compositions by Bartok, Beethoven and Debussy on Aug. 14 at Knox Presbyterian Church, 89 Dunn St. (at Lakeshore Road); and the Duke Piano Trio performs the music of Arno Babadanian, Haydn and Schubert on Aug.16 at St. Jude's Anglican Church, 160 William St. All three concerts begin at 8 p.m. with pre-performance talks at 7:30 p.m. Post-performance receptions offer opportunities to meet the performers. Jazz Festival rolls downtown Thursday Two Grammy Award-winning acts will kick off the 15th Annual Downtown Oakville Jazz Festival. Chuck Mangione will get things started on Wednesday, Aug. 8 at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, and fellow Grammy Award-winners the Yellowjackets will follow on Thursday, Aug. 9.
