Others have included providing Oakville with $208,000 to build a new bus terminal in the Uptown Core and the spending of $160,000 to improve GO Transit's Lakeshore West Corridor between Oakville and Mississauga and between Oakville and Hamilton. The issue of keeping handguns out of the hands of criminals has also cropped up in the Halton Region in recent weeks with six gun crimes taking place in July alone. For this complex issue the premier is taking a multipronged approach. "What we've done as a provincial government, for one, is put 1,000 more police on the streets and we've just announced that we're going to increase the complement of the OPP by another 200," he said. "We're also investing in our school boards so they can keep their schools open in the evenings and on weekends so kids have the opportunity to use up some energy in a healthy way." McGuinty is also calling on "The handgun is not used to hunt. It is not used by farmers to deal with pests. The handgun is the weapon of choice for the criminal element." Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty the federal government to toughen up gun laws, the process of which is currently stalled in the federal senate. As police estimate about 30 per cent of the handguns used in crimes are being stolen from legal handgun owners, McGuinty feels aggressively eliminating handguns from Ontario through the institution of a ban is warranted. "The handgun is not used to hunt. It is not used by farmers to deal with pests. The handgun is the weapon of choice for the criminal element. It is easily concealed and quickly accessed from inside a belt, holster or under a seat," he said. "I think it is in the greater public interest that we ban handguns, but we can't do that without the feds." The crowded emergency rooms of Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital was another topic addressed by McGuinty. "The first thing you don't want to do is take $3 billion out of healthcare. In this election one of the chief commitments being made by the Conservatives is that they will get rid of the health tax," said McGuinty. "I would love to be in a position to do that, but to do that will compromise our ability to deliver good quality healthcare." McGuinty says the health tax has done everything from generate thousands more nurses, shorter wait times to give 500,000 more Ontarians access to doctors and create a new medical school. "We've created a new ministry called the Ministry of Health Promotion, the job of which is to help keep us healthier in the first place, so we don't have to go to an emergency room or a doctor's office unnecessarily," he said. Despite the accomplishments pointed out and the progress being made the premier kept repeating a praise he will undoubtedly continue repeating for the remainder of his time in office. "There is still more work to be done," he said. b. Reface You may already own half of your new kitchen! If your cabinet boxes are in good shape, why pay to replace them?
