"Just using my own graphic design skills, as well as some other skills, I have to put that brochure together," she said. "I was able to design the front cover, a logo for the graffiti action group because they didn't have one before, and the general structure of the brochure." As happy as Halton police were to put Pitt's skills to use, this was not the only reason she was taken on for the internship. Exposing her to policing was also a top priority. Pitt received a lot of exposure to things police have to deal with on a daily basis when she was paired up with a 911 communicator to listen to incoming calls. "It was very interesting. I summer clearance sale up to guess you never really know the level of activity that happens within the Halton Region until you sit down and listen to those calls. This was another eye opener for me," she said. "They were saying how it was a slow or moderate level of calls for that day, but to me it seemed like a lot was going on." The skill of the 911 dispatchers was driven home for Pitt during a particular call involving a hysterical woman. "It was a domestic situation where there was someone threatening her and she just sounded very upset and it was hard to get her to calm down over the phone," she said. "I could see you really need a certain skill set to be able to handle that situation." Pitt's experience was not limited to hearing police calls, as another part of her internship required her to accompany an officer on patrol. As Pitt watched, the officer handled everything from pulling over a car for running a red light, to driving an intoxicated man to hospital, to assisting in a minor fender bender. "Again, very interesting," she said. With all she has seen and heard, Pitt is unsure if a career in policing is for her, however, she is not completely ruling out the possibility. "If I did want to work here I see myself as a more behind the scenes type person, working in the communications centre and that sort of thing. I don't know how I would do as an actual cop," she said. As far as Halton police are concerned, turning Pitt into a police officer is not what this experience was about. "Whether or not she chooses a career in policing is irrelevant," said Duraiappah. "We have done our part to provide an opportunity for one of our local young leaders to develop." Dance Supplies ppli A $5 BABY & BUCK THURS 24TH FRI 25TH ONLY! 2 DAYS ONLY!
