4- The Oakville Beaver, Friday August 10, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Oakville's Natural Stone Supplier PERMA Warning issued over heat recover ventilators The Oakville Fire Department has issued a safety advisory to residents who have a heat recovery ventilator (HRV) in their homes. The warning was issued after an investigation into a recent fire at 2225 Meadowlands Dr. revealed that the HRV installed in that home is suspected as the cause of a fire that caused extensive damage. "HRVs are part of many home heating, cooling and ventilating systems and are usually located close to the ceiling of the furnace room," said Gary Laframboise, Chief Fire Prevention Officer. "We are asking residents to do an inspection of their furnace area to determine if they have an HRV, double check the make and model and call the appropriate contractors if necessary." The HRV is a metal box connected to several air ducts and is typically supplied power by a normal electrical plug. The HRV is designed to remove moist, stale air from homes and provide replacement fresh air from outside. Venmar Ventilation has implemented a Safety Upgrade Program for certain models of heat recovery ventilators manufactured and installed between 1991 and 2001. Units manufactured and installed prior to 1991 or post 2001 are not affected. To date, the affected units are identified with the following brand names and model numbers: · Venmar Brand - AEXX, EARC, 1XX, 40X, 40XXX models* · Vanmar AVS Brand - 1.X, 2.X, 30XX, 55XX models · Flair Brand - 30, 30XX, 55, 55XX, 85115 models · vänEEBrand - 10, 1XX, 100XX, 20, 20XX, 90 mo · Sears Brand - OPTIMUM model · Guardian by Broan Brand - 100X, 200X models *X in the model number may be a letter or a number. The model number is located on a silver or black label positioned on the outside panel of the unit. These systems may have been sold under other brand names. Nutech is also conducting a voluntary inspection program for HRVs manufactured by Nutech R. Holdings Inc. that may pose a potential fire hazard. Any inquiries on these units can be directed to Nutech at 866-557-0535 or www.hrvinfoline.com.
