"This will be an urban environment unlike any other in Oakville," he said. The area, expected to eventually house about 50,000 residents and 25,000 jobs, will feature denser, more pedestrian-friendly and transit-oriented development than the town has elsewhere. It will also feature a linked Natural Heritage System of green space and wildlife corridors. As a result of the agreement, more than a dozen large landowners will abandon an Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) challenge scheduled to begin in September and forecasted to last as long as nine months. By reaching a settlement with the landowners, the Town not only saved the expense of a lengthy hearing (estimated once at $13 million), but also maintained control of development, said Oakville Planning Director Peter Cheatley. He also believes the Town managed to achieve almost all of its important goals for development of the contentious area. "We did really well here," he said. "We did better than we expected."
