Allow me to elaborate. Under normal circumstances nuns are probably about as funny as the average person, but due to their responsibilities and their uniform they are not usually regarded as Kings of Comedy. But, throw them into situations most people would not associate nuns with and laughter usually follows. This is formula for Nunsense ­ a fun bit of nonsense now playing at Stage West Mississauga. It's a formula that has been followed in the theatre for years from Ingrid Bergman as a Mother Superior giving boxing lessons in the Bells of St. Mary to Whoopi Goldberg turning a choir of nuns into a Motown influenced gospel act in Sister Act. And the formula works extremely well in Nunsense, which seems to delight in coming up with one extreme situation after another for the nuns. Dan Goggin penned the musical revue nearly 25 years ago and it has seen more than 5,000 productions in 21 languages around the world. Nunsense starts with the unlikely premise having five nuns from the Little Sisters of Hoboken performing a charity show to raise enough funds to bury the final six of 50 nuns killed by food poisoning thanks to a little accident by their cook -- Sister Julia Child of God.
