The script is filled with enough puns, jokes, songs and sight gags to put audiences in stitches and the cast at Stage West milk them for every laugh possible. It even pokes fun at not resorting to any penguin jokes. It is one of the funniest plays at Stage West in recent memory. Heading the ensemble cast is veteran actress Valeria Boyle as Sister Mary Regina, the fun-loving, but stern Mother Superior. Boyle once starred in the onewoman show Shirley Valentine, so she knows how to rule the spotlight whether she's on stage alone or sharing it with her cast members. The veteran actor knows how to milk a funny scene for every ounce of laughter, as witnessed by her hilarious soliloquy after Sister Mary Regina accidentally inhales a questionable bottle found in one of the student's locker rooms. Kristen Galer draws the most laughs as Sister Mary Amnesia, the mystery nun who can't remember her past. Oakville's Lauren Busteed, a recent graduate of Sheridan's theatre program, plays Sister Mary Leo, who yearns to be the first performing balle- rina in nun history. She has the daunting task of performing a scene from Swan Lake in a nun's habit. Busteed is also Assistant Choreographer to director and choreographer Di Nyland Proctor. Dawn Bergstrom, as Sister Mary Robert Anne, dreams of musical comedy stardom. Rounding out the cast is Cheryl Mullings, as Sister Mary Hubert, the ambitious nun, who makes little effort to hide her desire for the Mother Superior's job. In addition to displaying a fine comedic touch, Hubert shows off her singing prowess on the gospel finale. Nunsense succeeds because the play never pretends to be anything more than what it was intended to be ­ just plain funny. Nunsense is playing at Stage West Mississauga until Sept. 16. Performances run nightly Tuesday to Saturday with matinees on Wednesdays and Sundays.
