www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday August 17, 2007 - 35 Six Oakville soccer teams in Ontario Cup semifinals Last weekend was a winning weekend for the Oakville Soccer Club, as its rep teams won five of the nine Ontario Cup quarter-final contests they played in. Among the teams to advance were the under-16 girls' Phantoms (winning 3-1 over the Erin Mills Eagles A), under-15 boys' tier 2 Fusion (downing the Mississauga Falcons 52), under-13 boys' Raiders (blanking Kitchener Spirit A 2-0), under-13 girls' Titans (edging the Pickering Power Pythons 2-1) and under-12 girls' Hurricanes (defeating the Scarborough United Fury 2-1). Eliminated were the under-17 girls' Demons (losing 5-0 to Oshawa Kicks), under-15 boys' tier 1 Gunners (downed 4-1 by the Clarkson Comets), under-15 girls' Redgales (falling 2-1 to the Mississauga Falcons) and under-14 boys' Fury (dropping a 4-0 decision to the North Mississauga Panthers). The Phantoms, Fusion, Raiders, Titans and Hurricanes will all compete in Ontario Cup semifinal games Aug. 25-26 at various sites throughout southern Ontario. The under-17 boys' tier 1 Blue Stars, who had a bye in the quarter-final round, will also be in action. In those semifinals, the Raiders will face the Ottawa Capital United Mighty Blue, the Blue Stars will play the Dixie Dominators, the Titans will clash with the Clarkson Comets, the Hurricanes draw the Cumberland Cobra, the Phantoms will take on the London Supernova, and the Fusion will meet the Barrie Spirit A. Piper's Heath tough but fair Continued from page 34 small, it serves its purpose, seating 30 plus another 110 on the patio. It will eventually become a large halfway house in two to three years when a new clubhouse is built. In the end, the course will be what will attract golfers. While Piper's Heath certainly provides a challenge, it's not unfairly punitive like some links-style courses. The fescue, though thick in places, for the most part still allows you to advance the ball up the fairway instead of chopping furiously and running up your score. The most dangerous bunkers protect greens from risky shots while also allowing clear paths for those who choose to take a safe route. In short, the course can be whatever you want it to be. The Hurricanes won 2-1 and are one of six local teams that will compete in the playdown's semifinal round later this month. Driver Hinchcliffe recognized with Gilles Villeneuve Award Local auto racer James Hinchcliffe was presented with the Gilles Villeneuve Award last weekend at the 2007 Champ Car Atlantic Championship's season-ending awards banquet in Montreal. The award, named after the legendary Canadian Formula One star and 1976 Formula Atlantic champion, is traditionally presented to the driver in the Champ Car Atlantic Championship who possesses extraordinary ability and star quality and who has distinguished himself through sportsmanship, dedication and perseverance in the face of disappointment. Coincidentally, Hinchcliffe recently had one of the most disappointing showings of his young racing career, battling a broken front-wing mount to post a 14th-place finish in the final round of the season at Road America, Wisconsin. "To be honest, after the weekend I had at Road America, I was surprised to be leaving (the banquet) with any hardware," Hinchcliffe said. "I've known about the award in terms of I've always kept track of who's won it in the past and Gilles Villeneuve has always been one of my racing heroes. To have won an award that bears his name would mean a lot to any driver, but I think it means that little bit more when a Canadian wins it. Looking at the names who have won it in the past just adds to how special it is to be a recipient." Hinchcliffe's season included a pair of podium finishes on Canadian tracks (Mont-Tremblant and Edmonton), although he was unable to crack the top three at his home race in Toronto earlier this summer. "My season was an improvement over last year's, but still not quite what I was hoping to have had achieved," said Hinchcliffe, who switched to the Nevada-based Sierra Sierra Enterprises outfit this season. "We certainly had a quick car and were consistently fast, but we had a few `wrong place, wrong time' moments." Hinchcliffe's Sierra Sierra Enterprises teammate, Raphael Matos of Brazil, won the 2007 Champ Car Atlantic Championship. Hinchcliffe will compete once again this fall in the 2007-08 A1 GP World Cup of Motorsport, which kicks off with a two-day official pre-season test at England's Silverstone Circuit Aug. 28-29. The first round of the season will be held Sept. 29-30 in The Netherlands, where Hinchcliffe debuted with A1 Team Canada last year. Thank You to all of our loyal customers and staff for your support.
