www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday August 17, 2007 - 7 Oakville QEW expansion will add HOV lanes The expansion of the QEW in Oakville is good news for commuters, but people driving solo may find themselves battling the same gridlock. A High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane, to be used only by vehicles carrying more than one occupant, will be added to the QEW in both directions between Third Line and Burloak Drive, Transportation Minister Donna Cansfield announced Tuesday. The expansion from six to eight lanes in the area is expected to be finished by 2011, and is part of the McGuinty government's effort to ease congestion and encourage carpooling. "Growing communities such as Oakville depend on efficient transportation systems," said Cansfield. "More than 165,000 drivers use this section of the QEW daily. This work will reduce congestion, enhance safety, support the local economy and promote carpooling and transit." The $88.7 million expansion contract was awarded to Aecon Construction and Materials Limited of Toronto. "This is great news for Oakville residents," said Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn. "Additional HOV lanes mean less traffic congestion, a shorter drive to and from work and more time to spend with family and friends." Other scheduled improvements in Oakville include: · Reconstructing the Bronte Road interchange to improve road safety and operations · Reconstructing and realigning Bronte Road to the east · Building a new bridge at the QEW over the new realigned Bronte Road · Installing heritage light poles and repairing the Bronte Creek Bridge to ensure this heritage structure remains in good condition · Removing the service road interchange located west of Bronte Creek · Relocating the commuter parking lot west of Bronte Road · Adding lighting to improve nighttime visibility and safety. Also planned is widening the QEW from six to eight lanes to create an HOV lane in each direction from Trafalgar Road to Third Line. Work will include repairing the existing 16 Mile Creek bridge and replacing the 4th Line underpass. To minimize disruption to drivers, construction will be completed in stages. Short-term lane and ramp closures will be required. The ministry will post signs in advance to prepare drivers for lane closures and detours. "HOV lanes are a proven success," said Cansfield. "We know that HOV lanes shorten commute times significantly during morning and afternoon rush hour." This investment is part of the McGuinty government's fiveyear, $30-billion plus ReNew Ontario infrastructure investment plan. Since 2003, the Ontario government has committed $6.3 billion in highways, roads and bridges and invested $4.9 billion in public transit, including more than $1.8 billion in GO Transit. On June 15, the McGuinty government launched MoveOntario 2020, a $17.5-billion rapid transit plan for the GTA and Hamilton. NOW !
