2- The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday August 18, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Annual barbecue kicks off Terry Fox Run campaign By Krissie Rutherford OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Terry Fox wasn't "naïve" in thinking he'd run across Canada, raise a dollar for every Canadian, and then cancer would be cured. "What Terry offered us in 1980 was hope," his brother, Darryl Fox, told a group gathered at the 8th annual Oakville Scotia McLeod barbecue for the Terry Fox Foundation on Thursday. "That's what he really CORRECTION NOTICE Please be advised that the HP Canada FSI inserted in the Wednesday, August 15th edition of the Oakville Beaver, incorrectly identifies the HP Pavilion tx1210ca Entertainment Notebook as featuring touch screen capability. For the eighth year running, the National Director of the Terry Fox Foundation turned up at the local barbecue fundraiser, this year organized in partnership with local law firm O'Connor MacLeod Hanna LLP. Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn, Mayor Rob Burton, Ward 1 Councillor Ralph Robinson and president of the Canadian Cancer Society's Oakville chapter Joan Gibb were among the crowd gathered at the barbecue, considered the kick-off event for next month's Terry Fox Run. The barbecue's final fundraising tally hasn't been calculated yet, but the goal was set at $20,000. Every penny raised from the barbecue, silent auction, bake sale and more will be matched by Scotia MacLeod, which has raised $125,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation over the last seven years. Darryl thanked the bank for its "long history in support of cancer," which has helped further the foundation's endeavours. "Over the last 27 years (since Terry's run), it's obvious that tremendous progress has been made in working towards a cure," Darryl said, noting treat- LIESA KORTMANN / OAKVILLE BEAVER ONE FOR TERRY: Annette Micules, of O'Connor MacLeod Hanna LLP, serves up a burger Thursday at the 8th annual Oakville Scotia McLeod barbecue for the Terry Fox Foundation. For 12 years, Darryl has represented the foundation to share his brother's message. While he called it "an incredible privilege and honour," he can't wait for the day he no longer needs to speak on behalf of the foundation. "My dream is to one day not have to stand before people and talk about Terry that we'll have found a cure." Darryl read from his brother's biography, a chapter entitled `I'm not going to lose, even if I die.' Resonating his message that Terry Fox gives Canadians hope in the fight against cancer were Terry's own words, "I've got to have hope. It's all in attitude." "Words like this really give me inspiration," Darryl said. "Terry Fox has taught me how important it is to appreciate every second that we are alive." Darryl recognized that this year, nearly 3 million school kids in the country will participate in next month's Terry Fox Run. The movement is growing every year. "Together, one day we will realize Terry's dream, and I look forward to celebrating that," Darryl said. www.spaceageshelvingburlington.com www.spaceageshelving.ca P R O PA N E Switch To Save!
